The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is already starting to take shape, and cricket fans now have plenty to look forward to. The International Cricket Council has officially unveiled the tournament schedule, with the 14-team event set to be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The tournament will bring the ODI World Cup back to Africa for the first time since 2003. The competition will feature 57 matches across 12 venues, with the final scheduled for November 21, 2027.

For Indian cricket fans, the biggest early headline is the India vs Pakistan clash. The two traditional rivals have been placed in the same group, setting up another highly anticipated World Cup meeting.

India vs Pakistan on October 10

India’s campaign is set to begin with a major contest against Australia on October 7 in Cape Town. Just three days later, India will face Pakistan on October 10 in Johannesburg.

The India-Pakistan fixture is likely to attract enormous attention around the cricket world, particularly because the two sides will meet during the main group phase of the new-look World Cup format.

India will then face Afghanistan on October 14 in Centurion. The team is also scheduled to play the side coming through Qualifier A on October 17 before taking on Zimbabwe on October 24.

The early schedule gives India a challenging start, with Australia and Pakistan among the first opponents before Afghanistan and the other group-stage matches.

The full tournament schedule was unveiled during the ICC’s schedule-launch programme in Cape Town on October 1, 2026. The ICC had already confirmed that the event would feature 14 teams, 57 matches and 12 venues across the three host nations.

A completely different World Cup format

The 2027 ODI World Cup will not follow the same format used in the 2019 and 2023 editions. The ICC has introduced a new three-stage competition designed to make matches meaningful from the opening stages.

The tournament begins with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked teams among the 14 qualified sides. Those teams will play a round-robin competition, with the winner moving into the next stage.

The remaining 12 teams will then be divided into two groups of six. Each team will play the other sides in its group.

The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7 stage. One additional team β€” the best fourth-placed side across the two groups β€” will also make it through.

That creates a seven-team Super 7 stage, where every side will play each other once. The top four teams will then advance to the semi-finals.

The semi-final structure is also straightforward: the team finishing first in the Super 7 standings will face the fourth-placed team, while the second-placed side will meet the third-placed team.

The winners of those two matches will book their places in the World Cup final on November 21.

India and Pakistan in the same group

India and Pakistan will be part of the same six-team group in the main stage, alongside Australia, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and the team coming through Qualifier A.

That makes India’s group particularly interesting. Australia are the defending champions after winning the 2023 World Cup, while Pakistan and India bring one of international cricket’s most closely followed rivalries to the competition.

The group-stage qualification rules also mean that teams cannot afford too many mistakes. Three teams from each group will automatically move into the Super 7, while the best fourth-placed team across both groups will get the remaining spot.

That additional qualification route could make every run, wicket and net run-rate calculation important as the tournament progresses.

12 venues across three countries

The 2027 World Cup will be spread across three African nations.

South Africa will host matches at eight venues, while Zimbabwe will have three venues and Namibia will host games at one venue.

The confirmed South African venues are Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Centurion, Newlands in Cape Town, Kingsmead in Durban, St George’s Park in Gqeberha, Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl and Buffalo Park in KuGompo City.

Zimbabwe’s venues are Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls. Namibia’s venue is the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.

The tournament will therefore give fans a chance to experience international cricket across a wide range of African cricketing cities.

It is also a historic occasion for Namibia, which will host matches at a senior men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time. South Africa and Zimbabwe previously hosted the 2003 World Cup alongside Kenya.

10 teams have already qualified

At the time of the schedule announcement, 10 of the 14 World Cup places have been decided.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have direct places as co-hosts. India, Pakistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have also secured qualification through the ODI ranking route.

The remaining four places will be decided through the qualification pathway.

Namibia, despite being one of the co-hosts, does not receive an automatic qualification place because it is not an ICC Full Member. West Indies will also have to go through the qualification route after missing out on direct qualification.

This means the final composition of the tournament will not be known until the qualification process is completed.

World Cup returns to Africa after 24 years

The 2027 edition will be particularly significant for African cricket. The men’s ODI World Cup last came to the continent in 2003, when South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya jointly hosted the tournament.

This time, South Africa and Zimbabwe will again stage the global event, while Namibia joins as a co-host.

The ICC has described the tournament under the “Three Nations, One Heartbeat” identity, reflecting the joint hosting effort of the three countries. The event will feature 14 teams competing over 57 matches.

For fans, the new format could provide a very different World Cup experience. Instead of a straightforward league followed by semi-finals, teams will have to negotiate multiple stages before reaching the knockout rounds.

And for India, the first major date that everyone will have circled is October 10.

India vs Pakistan in Johannesburg could become one of the most watched matches of the entire tournament, while India’s opening game against Australia on October 7 will provide an immediate test.

The road to the 2027 ODI World Cup is still more than a year away, but the schedule has now given fans something concrete to look forward to.
