Jordan Pickford faces court after Lamborghini driving incident
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is facing a court appearance after admitting to driving without due care and attention during an incident involving his Lamborghini in Knutsford, Cheshire.
The Everton and England No.1 was stopped by police after his blue Lamborghini Urus was allegedly involved in a dangerous manoeuvre at a junction, forcing two other vehicles to brake sharply to avoid a collision.
The incident took place on 14 April 2026 on the streets of Knutsford. According to court documents, Pickford had been driving along Princess Street before reaching the junction with Toft Road.
Police allege that the goalkeeper completely ignored the give-way markings and entered Toft Road, causing two vehicles to slam on their brakes. The Lamborghini then continued along the road before a police officer pursued it.
Pickford, 32, has pleaded guilty to the offence and is due to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on 7 December, where he is expected to present mitigation.
What happened during the incident?
The details of the incident were outlined in a statement from PC Cecil Ricardo of Cheshire Police.
The officer said he had just left the police station when he noticed a blue Lamborghini Urus with personalised number plates travelling along Princess Street.
According to the statement, the vehicle reached the junction with Toft Road and failed to stop at the give-way markings. Police said the manoeuvre forced two vehicles already using the road to brake heavily to avoid a crash.
The Lamborghini then travelled down Toft Road.
PC Ricardo activated the police vehicle’s lights and siren and followed Pickford. The officer reported that he was travelling at around 50mph on the road, despite the speed limit being 30mph, while the Lamborghini was still pulling away.
Pickford eventually appeared to notice the pursuing police vehicle and pulled over.
There is no suggestion in the court information that a collision actually occurred or that anyone was injured. However, the alleged circumstances were serious enough to result in a criminal prosecution for driving without due care and attention.
Pickford subsequently entered a guilty plea in writing.
He told Warrington Magistrates Court that he wanted to attend court personally to put forward his mitigation. His case was then formally adjourned.
A difficult headline for England’s No.1
The court case comes at an interesting point in Pickford’s career.
On the football pitch, 2026 has been another significant year for the goalkeeper. Pickford was selected by Thomas Tuchel for England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad and continued his role as the Three Lions’ first-choice goalkeeper.
England Football’s official records now list Pickford with 92 senior international caps and 47 clean sheets.
He also created a significant piece of England history at the 2026 World Cup.
Pickford became England’s record holder for appearances at the men’s World Cup, moving beyond legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s previous mark of 17 appearances. He finished the tournament with 19 World Cup appearances.
That achievement underlined just how important Pickford has become to England over the past decade.
He made his international debut in November 2017 and was England’s goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Euro 2024. He also featured at the 2026 World Cup in North America.
His performances have made him one of the most experienced players in the current England squad.
That makes the driving case a very different kind of headline from the football news usually surrounding him.
What is driving without due care and attention?
Driving without due care and attention is a road traffic offence in England and Wales. Broadly, it concerns a driver falling below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver.
The court will consider the circumstances of the individual case when deciding what penalty, if any, should be imposed.
In Pickford’s case, the allegation centres on the reported failure to obey the give-way markings and the consequences of the manoeuvre, alongside the subsequent pursuit described by the police officer.
Pickford’s guilty plea means the December hearing will focus on the appropriate outcome and any mitigation presented to the court.
The exact penalty will be a matter for the magistrates.
Pickford’s football career continues
Away from the legal proceedings, Pickford remains a central figure for both Everton and England.
The goalkeeper came through Sunderland’s academy before progressing through loan spells at clubs including Burton Albion, Bradford City and Preston North End. His career eventually took him to Everton, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most recognisable goalkeepers.
For England, his penalty-saving heroics at the 2018 World Cup helped the Three Lions defeat Colombia in a shootout and reach the quarter-finals.
He later played every minute of England’s run to the Euro 2020 final and was again the first-choice goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. England Football also notes that he played every minute of the Euro 2024 campaign as England finished runners-up.
His latest World Cup campaign added another record to his international career, with Pickford overtaking Shilton as England’s most experienced goalkeeper in World Cup matches.
Now, however, attention will turn away from football when Pickford returns to court in December.
The 7 December hearing is expected to provide the next significant development in the case, with Pickford having already indicated that he wants to attend and put forward his mitigation.
For now, the key facts remain that the incident occurred in Knutsford in April, police allege that his Lamborghini failed to give way and that two vehicles were forced to brake to avoid a collision. Pickford has pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.
The case serves as another reminder that even high-profile professional footballers are subject to the same road laws as every other driver.
