Suryakumar Yadav suffers another setback as Mumbai leave him out of Ranji Trophy opener

Suryakumar Yadav has suffered another significant setback in his career. After losing his place in India’s T20I plans, the experienced batter has now been left out of Mumbai’s squad for their opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season against Chandigarh.

The decision is particularly notable because Suryakumar had reportedly made himself available for Mumbai during the domestic season. Yet when the 16-member squad was announced on October 5, his name was missing. Mumbai have instead gone with a combination of experienced domestic players and younger talent, with Siddhesh Lad named captain and 19-year-old Ayush Mhatre appointed vice-captain.

The match against Chandigarh will be played at the Wankhede Stadium from October 11 to 14. Mumbai, one of the most successful teams in Ranji Trophy history with 42 titles, will begin the new campaign with plenty of attention on their selection decisions.

For Suryakumar, however, the biggest question is what this omission means for his future in red-ball cricket.

Why did Mumbai leave out Suryakumar Yadav?

Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar has provided an important explanation for the decision.

According to reports, the selectors are not closing the door on Suryakumar, but they want him to regain his rhythm in red-ball cricket before bringing him back into the side. Pawar pointed out that the batter has not played a first-class match for around 18 months.

That is a significant factor.

Suryakumar’s last first-class appearance for Mumbai came in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Vidarbha in February 2025. Since then, his cricket has largely been focused on the shorter formats. His first-class career, meanwhile, includes 86 matches and 5,758 runs, showing that he is hardly an inexperienced red-ball player.

The Mumbai selectors therefore appear to be taking a cautious approach rather than simply dropping him permanently.

Pawar has reportedly described Suryakumar as a proven performer and a big-match player, while suggesting that a few red-ball matches would help him get back into the rhythm required for first-class cricket.

That could leave the door open for a return later in the Ranji season.

Suryakumar’s India future is also under the spotlight

The Mumbai snub comes at a difficult time for Suryakumar’s international career.

The 36-year-old was India’s T20I captain during the team’s successful 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. However, following the tournament, he has not been included in India’s subsequent plans, with the leadership picture moving in a different direction.

That makes regular domestic cricket even more important if Suryakumar wants to keep his international ambitions alive.

A strong Ranji Trophy campaign could have given him an opportunity to make a case for himself in the longest format. Instead, he will have to wait for another chance to enter Mumbai’s playing group.

It is worth stressing that being left out of the first match does not necessarily mean Suryakumar has been excluded from the entire Ranji Trophy season. Mumbai have announced the squad for the opening fixture, and selections can change as the tournament progresses.

So, for now, it is better described as a major setback rather than the end of his domestic career.

Mumbai back youth and experience

While Suryakumar’s omission has grabbed most of the attention, Mumbai’s squad also tells an interesting story about the team’s plans.

Siddhesh Lad will lead the side after an outstanding 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. The experienced batter scored 774 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 77.40, including five centuries. He has therefore earned the responsibility of leading Mumbai into the new campaign.

The appointment of Ayush Mhatre as vice-captain is perhaps even more interesting.

Mhatre, who is only 19, was the captain of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team earlier this year. Giving him a leadership role at Mumbai alongside established names shows how highly the domestic giants rate his potential.

Mumbai have also included Yashasvi Jaiswal, another major name who can add considerable quality to the batting lineup. Jaiswal has already established himself as one of India’s leading red-ball batters and has scored heavily in first-class cricket. He crossed 1,000 Ranji Trophy runs last season and will be looking to use the domestic competition to sharpen his game ahead of India’s upcoming assignments.

The squad also features Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, Suved Parkar, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande, giving Mumbai a strong blend of batting depth, spin options and pace.

Mumbai Ranji Trophy 2026-27 squad

Mumbai’s squad for the opening game against Chandigarh is:

Siddhesh Lad (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ayush Mhatre (vice-captain), Divyaansh Saxena, Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Suved Parkar, Aakash Anand (wicketkeeper), Hardik Tamore (wicketkeeper), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Avasthi, Sylvester Dsouza and Onkar Tarmale.

Suryakumar Yadav is the most notable absentee.

What happens next for Suryakumar Yadav?

The immediate future is difficult to predict.

On one hand, the fact that Suryakumar made himself available suggests that he remains interested in playing domestic cricket and potentially rebuilding his red-ball credentials. On the other, the selectors have clearly indicated that his lack of recent first-class cricket is a concern.

That means the situation could change if Mumbai feel he has done enough work away from the first fixture or if the team requires additional experience during the tournament.

For Suryakumar, the message from the selectors appears fairly straightforward: red-ball cricket matters, and recent match practice matters even for an established international player.

His extraordinary record in white-ball cricket is not enough on its own to guarantee a place in a Ranji Trophy side.

The coming weeks could therefore be crucial. If Suryakumar gets another opportunity with Mumbai, he will have a chance to answer the selectors with performances rather than reputation.

For now, though, the headline is clear: Suryakumar Yadav has been left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy opener despite making himself available.

It is another unexpected chapter in the career of a player who only recently lifted the T20 World Cup as India’s captain. Whether this proves to be a temporary setback or the beginning of a bigger change in his career will become clearer as the Ranji Trophy season unfolds.
