England recall Mason Crane as Jofra Archer rested for Pakistan tri-series
England have made an interesting addition to their squad for the upcoming Pakistan ODI tri-series, with Mason Crane returning to international cricket after an absence of more than eight years. The 29-year-old Glamorgan leg-spinner has been rewarded for his consistent domestic performances and could now get another chance to make an impression on the international stage.
Crane’s recall is one of the biggest talking points from England’s squad announcement. He has played just one Test and two T20 internationals for England, with his Test appearance coming against Australia in Sydney in 2018. Eight years later, the leg-spinner is back in the conversation as England prepare for a busy winter and continue building towards next year’s 50-over World Cup.
The selection also comes with some notable absences. Jofra Archer has been rested for the Pakistan trip, while Jos Buttler misses out after suffering a hamstring injury. Jacob Bethell is still recovering from knee surgery.
Mason Crane gets another opportunity
Crane’s journey back into the England setup has been a long one. After moving from Hampshire to Glamorgan in 2024, he has established himself as an experienced and reliable performer across formats.
His 2026 County Championship campaign has been particularly impressive. Crane claimed 34 wickets and also produced the best batting season of his first-class career, registering his first two hundreds.
That combination of improved batting and consistent leg-spin has brought him back into England’s plans.
England national selector Marcus North highlighted Crane’s performances for Glamorgan and described him as an experienced leg-spinner who deserved another opportunity at international level.
The Pakistan conditions could also provide an interesting test for Crane. With spin expected to remain an important part of the game in Pakistan, the tour could give him valuable international experience while allowing England to assess their options beyond their established players.
Crane’s return is also significant because England’s Test spin department remains an area of interest. While the Pakistan tri-series is focused on ODI cricket, strong performances could help Crane strengthen his case for future Test opportunities.
Jofra Archer rested as England manage workload
The other major talking point is Archer’s absence.
Archer remains one of England’s key players across formats, but England have a demanding winter ahead. The decision to leave him out of the Pakistan tour appears consistent with the wider workload-management approach surrounding their fast bowlers.
Archer was recently part of England’s ODI side against Sri Lanka, with the ECB naming him in the XI for the opening match of that series.
England will also travel to Australia after the Pakistan tri-series for three ODIs and five T20 internationals in November. After that comes a three-Test series in South Africa in December.
With such a packed schedule, managing Archer’s workload will be crucial, particularly because England see him as an important player in all three formats.
The Pakistan series therefore gives England an opportunity to look at alternative combinations while keeping one of their most valuable fast bowlers fresh for the months ahead.
New faces and returning players add depth
Crane is not the only player attracting attention in the squad.
Uncapped players James Coles and Henry Crocombe have been included, while Sam Curran and Adil Rashid return after injury.
Harry Brook will captain the side, with experienced names including Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson also included.
The squad gives England a mixture of experience and fresh options as they continue to develop their white-ball group.
The current England setup has already featured several young players in recent months. The ECB’s recent squads show players such as Tom Banton, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton and Rehan Ahmed being used alongside established names including Brook, Buttler, Root and Archer.
For players such as Coles and Crocombe, the Pakistan tour could therefore be an important opportunity to experience international cricket from inside the England setup.
Brydon Carse is another notable absentee. He remains unavailable while under investigation by the Cricket Regulator following an incident outside a nightclub in Derby in August.
England’s Pakistan tri-series schedule
The three-team ODI tournament features England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Each team will play the other two sides twice, with the top two teams qualifying for the final.
The tournament begins in Rawalpindi before moving to Lahore. The ECB’s official schedule confirms seven matches between 18 and 31 October.
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 18 October | Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | Rawalpindi |
| 20 October | Pakistan vs England | Rawalpindi |
| 22 October | Sri Lanka vs England | Rawalpindi |
| 25 October | Pakistan vs England | Lahore |
| 27 October | Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | Lahore |
| 29 October | Sri Lanka vs England | Lahore |
| 31 October | Tri-series final | Lahore |
England’s first match is against Pakistan on 20 October, giving Brook and his teammates an immediate test against the hosts.
The two sides will meet again on 25 October in Lahore, while England’s second group opponent will be Sri Lanka.
England squad for Pakistan tri-series
Harry Brook (captain), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Josh Tongue.
The squad contains a clear blend of experience and experimentation. Root and Rashid bring years of international experience, while Crane, Coles and Crocombe represent players looking to establish themselves.
For Crane in particular, this is about much more than simply returning to the England dressing room. A strong run in Pakistan could put his name back into conversations surrounding England’s spin options.
England’s white-ball calendar is packed before the Test tour of South Africa, so the Pakistan tri-series will be another important piece of preparation for the World Cup cycle.
The biggest question now is whether Crane can turn his long-awaited recall into regular international cricket.
After waiting eight years for another opportunity, the leg-spinner finally has his chance.
