Shakhtar Donetsk stun AEK Athens with comeback win at Stamford Bridge

Shakhtar Donetsk produced an impressive comeback to defeat AEK Athens at Stamford Bridge, delivering a memorable European night in London in front of 29,144 supporters. Despite playing thousands of kilometres away from their traditional home, the Ukrainian champions showed resilience and attacking quality to turn the game around and secure a valuable victory.

The match was another reminder of the extraordinary circumstances under which Shakhtar have continued competing in European football. Unable to play at their home ground in Donetsk for more than a decade, the club have been forced to adapt to unfamiliar stadiums and changing locations while maintaining their ambitions on the continental stage.

AEK Athens initially looked capable of spoiling the occasion after taking the lead through Lovro Majer. However, Shakhtar responded quickly, with Pedrinho converting a penalty before a late Vinicius Tobias effort and a goal from Gleiker Mendoza sealed the comeback.

The result gives Shakhtar confidence ahead of their next European assignment against Inter Milan, while AEK Athens must quickly regroup before travelling to face Manchester City.

Lovro Majer puts AEK Athens ahead

AEK Athens began the contest with purpose and found a way through Shakhtar’s defence in the 28th minute.

The breakthrough came after Stavros Pilios produced an impressive piece of individual skill to work his way into the penalty area. Showing excellent awareness, he delivered a pass across the box for Lovro Majer, who finished confidently into the bottom corner.

The goal rewarded AEK’s positive approach and placed immediate pressure on the Ukrainian side. For Shakhtar, playing in front of a large crowd at a venue far removed from their usual surroundings, conceding first could have made the evening considerably more difficult.

However, the response from the Ukrainian champions was swift. Rather than allowing AEK to build on their advantage, Shakhtar increased the pressure and began searching for an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off just six minutes after the opening goal, setting up a contest that would remain competitive until the closing stages.

Pedrinho penalty changes the momentum

Shakhtar’s equaliser arrived in the 34th minute following a VAR review that changed the referee’s original decision.

Alisson Santana was fouled by Filipe Relvas during an attacking move. Referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded a free-kick, believing the contact had occurred outside the penalty area.

However, after reviewing the incident with the video assistant referee, Kavanagh ruled that the foul had taken place inside the box and awarded Shakhtar a penalty.

Pedrinho stepped forward with an opportunity to bring his team level. The midfielder kept his composure and sent a precise shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving AEK goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli moving in the wrong direction.

The equaliser was an important turning point. Shakhtar had responded to going behind with determination, and the goal restored their belief that a victory was within reach.

For AEK, the decision was a frustrating moment after taking the lead, but the Greek side still had time to regain control of the contest.

The two teams continued to battle for an advantage, with the outcome remaining uncertain as the match approached its final 10 minutes.

Late goals seal Shakhtar Donetsk’s comeback

Shakhtar finally found the breakthrough with approximately 10 minutes remaining.

Vinicius Tobias unleashed a drive towards goal that Brignoli managed to deflect across the goalmouth. The goalkeeper’s intervention was not enough to keep the effort out, allowing Shakhtar to move ahead and putting the Ukrainian side in a commanding position.

The goal gave the home side the momentum they had been searching for since falling behind in the first half. With the clock running down, AEK needed an immediate response to keep their hopes alive.

Instead, Shakhtar delivered another decisive blow six minutes later. Gleiker Mendoza found the net to complete the comeback and put the result beyond doubt.

From trailing 1-0 to securing a two-goal victory, Shakhtar demonstrated the composure and attacking intent required to win a demanding European fixture.

For AEK Athens, the late goals were a disappointing conclusion to a match in which they had initially taken the initiative. Their defensive organisation held for much of the contest, but Shakhtar’s persistence ultimately proved decisive.

The victory also provides Shakhtar with valuable momentum as they prepare for another challenging away assignment in Italy.

Shakhtar’s remarkable journey away from home

While the result will be remembered for the late goals, Shakhtar’s performance also carries a deeper significance because of the circumstances surrounding the club.

The Ukrainian side have been unable to play at their traditional Donbas Arena home in Donetsk since 2014. The conflict in eastern Ukraine forced the club to relocate, and Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 created further challenges for its players, staff and supporters.

Over the years, Shakhtar have staged European home matches in several countries, including Poland, Germany and Slovenia. Their move to Stamford Bridge for the 2026-27 Champions League campaign represents another chapter in that journey.

Playing at Chelsea’s historic ground gives the Ukrainian champions an opportunity to welcome a substantial crowd while continuing to compete at the highest level of European football. The attendance of 29,144 against AEK Athens demonstrated the interest surrounding their temporary London home.

The club’s ability to maintain its European ambitions despite years of disruption has become an important part of its identity. Every home fixture away from Ukraine presents logistical challenges, but the players must still deliver results on the pitch.

Under head coach Arda Turan, Shakhtar are continuing to build their campaign while balancing the demands of domestic and European football.

Their victory over AEK Athens was therefore significant not only for the three points but also for the confidence it can provide as the Champions League league phase progresses.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Inter Milan: what comes next?

Shakhtar’s next Champions League assignment will be a difficult test against Italian giants Inter Milan on October 21. The match will take place at the San Siro, where the Ukrainian side will face a team accustomed to competing against Europe’s strongest clubs.

The victory over AEK Athens gives Shakhtar a timely boost before travelling to Italy. However, they will need to maintain their defensive discipline and take their chances if they hope to produce another positive result.

AEK Athens, meanwhile, face an equally demanding challenge when they travel to England to meet Manchester City on October 20. After surrendering their lead at Stamford Bridge, the Greek side will be keen to respond with a stronger performance.

Both fixtures could prove important in shaping the teams’ positions in the Champions League league phase.

For Shakhtar, the immediate priority will be carrying the confidence from their comeback into the Inter match. Their ability to respond after conceding first showed that they can remain competitive even when the situation turns against them.

The 3-1 win over AEK Athens delivered an exciting night for supporters at Stamford Bridge and another encouraging moment for a club that has spent years playing away from home.
