The idea has attracted attention because of the historical connection between India and South Africa through Mahatma Gandhi. Although Namibia is one of the three hosts, it does not receive an automatic World Cup place because its hosting status does not provide the same automatic qualification berth as the Full Member hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. Namibia therefore has to go through the qualification pathway.
The West Indies are another major name facing the qualification route after missing direct qualification. Ireland are also among the Full Members involved in the race for the remaining places. The final four teams will be decided through the 2027 World Cup Qualifier.
What will the 2027 World Cup format look like?
The 2027 World Cup will have a completely different structure from the 2023 tournament.
The competition will begin with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked teams among the 14 qualified sides. Each team will play the other two, and only the top team will advance to the main stage.
After that, 12 teams will enter the main group stage. They will be divided into two groups of six, with every team playing five matches.
The top three teams from each group will advance. One additional team will also qualify as the best fourth-placed side across the two groups. That will create a Super 7 stage.
The Super 7 will contain 21 round-robin matches. Each team will play six games, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals. The first-placed team will face the fourth-placed side, while second will meet third. The two winners will then contest the final.
This format means the tournament will have meaningful matches right from the opening stage, while teams will also need to manage their campaign across multiple rounds.
What could India’s group look like?
The exact groups cannot be confirmed until the official tournament structure and schedule are released. Any group combination circulating on social media should therefore be treated as speculation.
However, based on the teams currently occupying direct qualification positions, India could potentially be drawn alongside some major names such as Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh or one of the teams that comes through the qualification pathway.
The presence of Pakistan would naturally create enormous interest among Indian cricket fans, although their actual group assignment will only be known once the ICC confirms the draw and competition structure.
The same applies to Australia and South Africa. Both could potentially create high-profile matches for India, depending on the final grouping.
12 venues across three countries
The 2027 World Cup will be spread across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The ICC announced the host cities and venues in July as preparations for the tournament continued.
South Africa will host the majority of matches, with venues including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Centurion, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Paarl and East London.
Zimbabwe will also host matches, while Windhoek will give Namibia an opportunity to stage World Cup games on home soil.
