Virat Kohli has given Indian cricket fans an emotional reason to look ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former India captain has confirmed that the 2027 World Cup will be his last World Cup for India, bringing a possible end to one of the greatest World Cup journeys in modern cricket.
Kohli made the revelation ahead of India’s ODI series against the West Indies. Speaking to broadcaster JioStar, he said that the upcoming World Cup would be his final appearance in the tournament for India and that his motivation is to give everything he has in the hope of lifting the trophy.
“For me, it’s the last World Cup I’m going to play for India,” Kohli said. He also made it clear that winning the World Cup is the ultimate goal and that he is prepared to give everything required to achieve it.
The announcement comes at a fascinating stage of Kohli’s career. He has already stepped away from Test cricket and T20 internationals, meaning ODI cricket is now his only format for India. The 2027 World Cup will therefore carry even greater significance for a player who has already experienced both the joy of winning the trophy and the heartbreak of falling short.

Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs. His latest century also strengthened his position as the leading century-maker in ODI cricket.

Just when questions about how much longer Kohli will continue in international cricket were becoming louder, the 37-year-old has made his World Cup plan clear: 2027 will be his final World Cup for India.
That does not mean he has announced that he will retire from ODI cricket immediately after the tournament. His statement specifically concerns the World Cup, so his future beyond the 2027 event should not be treated as officially confirmed unless he makes another announcement.
2027 World Cup will be different from previous editions
The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The tournament will return to Africa for the first time since the 2003 edition.
The ICC has confirmed 12 venues across the three countries: eight in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia. The venues include the Wanderers Stadium, Newlands Cricket Ground, Kingsmead, St George’s Park, Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club and the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
The tournament is scheduled for October and November 2027 and will feature 14 teams and 57 matches under a new three-stage format.
For Kohli, playing a World Cup in Africa will also provide a completely different challenge from his four previous appearances.
Can Kohli finish his World Cup career with another trophy?
That is the question Indian fans will be asking from now until the 2027 tournament.
Kohli already knows what it feels like to win the World Cup. He was part of India’s 2011 title-winning squad. He also knows what it feels like to produce an extraordinary individual tournament and still walk away without the trophy, as happened in 2023.
