Marc Marquez Japanese MotoGP: Ducati star cuts Jorge Martin’s lead to two points

Marc Marquez has turned the 2026 MotoGP title race into a thrilling two-horse battle after completing a perfect weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix. The reigning world champion won both the sprint and Sunday’s main race at Motegi, cutting Jorge Martin’s championship advantage to just two points with six rounds of the season still remaining.

Marquez started the Japanese Grand Prix from second on the grid after Martin produced a new lap record to take pole position. The Aprilia rider made the better start and managed to keep his Ducati rival behind him through the opening stages.

But Marquez stayed patient.

The Ducati rider eventually found his opportunity on lap 11, moving past Martin on the inside and taking control of the race. Once in front, Marquez was able to increase the pace and create enough breathing room to control the final stages.

The official MotoGP classification shows Marquez winning by 1.363 seconds from Martin, with Marco Bezzecchi completing the podium for Aprilia.

The result was especially important in the championship because Martin had arrived at Motegi with a 12-point advantage. After the Japanese GP, that lead has been reduced to only two points.

Martin now sits on 333 points, while Marquez has moved to 331. Bezzecchi remains third on 284 points, meaning he is still mathematically involved in the championship fight, although the gap to the leading pair has grown considerably.

Marquez makes the perfect response

For Marquez, the Japanese Grand Prix could hardly have gone better.

He had already won Saturday’s sprint, although that race contained plenty of drama. Marquez controlled the sprint at the front, while Diogo Moreira produced an impressive ride to finish second. Martin originally crossed the line second but was handed a one-position penalty for track limits, dropping him to third.

That gave Marquez a valuable points advantage heading into Sunday’s longer race.

The seven-time MotoGP champion then completed the job on Sunday.

Marquez admitted that the race was difficult while he was following Martin, but he remained confident that he could make his pace count once he moved into the lead.

That patience proved decisive. Rather than forcing an early move and risking a mistake, Marquez waited until the race had settled before making his attack.

Once ahead, he was able to stretch the gap and bring the Ducati home for another hugely valuable 25 points.

It was also Marquez’s 79th MotoGP victory, adding another major milestone to an already remarkable career.

Martin limits the damage at Motegi

Although Martin will be disappointed not to win after starting from pole, second place was an important result for his championship campaign.

The Aprilia rider had already shown impressive speed by breaking the Motegi lap record in qualifying. His 1:42.371 lap put him ahead of Marquez, who qualified second with a 1:42.481.

Martin also got away cleanly at the start of Sunday’s race and initially looked capable of controlling the contest.

However, Marquez’s race pace eventually proved too strong.

After losing the lead, Martin stayed within striking distance but could not find a realistic opportunity to retake first place. He eventually settled for second and 20 championship points.

That means Martin leaves Japan still at the top of the standings, but the cushion he built earlier in the season has almost disappeared.

With only two points separating the pair, every sprint, qualifying session and Grand Prix from this point could have a major impact on the championship.

Bezzecchi keeps his title hopes alive

Marco Bezzecchi also enjoyed a strong weekend for Aprilia by finishing third.

The Italian rider had to defend his podium position against Enea Bastianini in the closing stages, but managed to hold on and collect another important haul of points.

Bezzecchi now has 284 points, 49 behind Martin and 47 behind Marquez.

That is a significant gap, but with six rounds still remaining, the championship is not mathematically over for the Aprilia rider.

Aprilia will also take plenty of confidence from having Martin and Bezzecchi on the podium. The Japanese GP therefore became another important weekend for the manufacturer as it continues to challenge Ducati at the front of the championship.

A difficult weekend for Alex Marquez

It was a very different story for Gresini rider Alex Marquez.

The younger Marquez had a weekend to forget after crashing out of Sunday’s race. He had already been involved in a three-rider incident during Saturday’s sprint and was handed a double long-lap penalty as a result.

His main race then ended prematurely, adding another setback to his Japanese GP weekend.

The incident was another reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in MotoGP, particularly with the pressure increasing as the championship reaches its decisive phase.

The MotoGP title race is wide open

The biggest winner from Motegi was undoubtedly Marc Marquez.

He arrived in Japan needing to make up ground on Martin and leaves the circuit just two points behind the championship leader.

That is a remarkable turnaround.

Martin still has the advantage, but Marquez now has momentum. Winning both the sprint and Grand Prix also sends a clear message to the rest of the grid: the reigning champion is not ready to surrender his crown.

The remaining six rounds will now be watched closely as Martin attempts to protect his narrow advantage and Marquez looks to complete another championship comeback.

For fans, the timing could hardly be better. With only two points separating the top two riders, even a small mistake, mechanical problem or strong sprint performance could completely change the standings.

And with Bezzecchi still within mathematical reach, the championship fight has another potential twist waiting in the background.

The Japanese MotoGP has therefore delivered exactly what a title race needs at this stage of the season — pressure, strategy, overtaking and an incredibly tight championship battle.

Marc Marquez is now just two points away from Jorge Martin. Six rounds remain. The MotoGP title fight is officially wide open.
