India vs Pakistan hockey: Abhishek’s last-minute goal sends India into Asian Games 2026 final

India produced another unforgettable chapter in its hockey rivalry with Pakistan, but this time the drama went right down to the final minute.

The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Pakistan 4-3 in a thrilling semifinal at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Thursday. Just when the contest appeared to be heading towards a tense finish at 3-3, Abhishek found the decisive goal in the final minute to send India into the gold-medal match.

The victory also means India have secured at least a silver medal in men’s hockey. The defending champions will now face the winner of the second semifinal between Malaysia and South Korea in Saturday’s final.

But the scoreline only tells part of the story. India had looked firmly in control early in the match before Pakistan produced a stunning fightback.

India make a flying start

India wasted little time putting pressure on Pakistan.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring through a penalty corner in the fifth minute before adding another from a penalty corner eight minutes later. His brace gave India a 2-0 advantage and put Pakistan under immediate pressure.

Sukhjeet Singh then added India’s third goal in the 23rd minute with a field goal.

Suddenly, India were 3-0 ahead and appeared to be in complete command.

Pakistan, however, refused to disappear from the contest.

The three-goal deficit could have ended the match as a contest, but Pakistan responded strongly and gradually changed the momentum. Their attacking pressure began causing problems for the Indian defence, turning what looked like a comfortable Indian victory into a nail-biting finish.

Pakistan complete a stunning comeback

The biggest twist of the semifinal came after India had built its 3-0 lead.

Pakistan began finding gaps and eventually scored three goals to bring the match level at 3-3. According to match reports, Abu Mahmood, Hannan Shahid and Waheed Rana were among Pakistan’s scorers during the comeback.

From India’s perspective, the three-goal advantage had disappeared.

From Pakistan’s perspective, the comeback had suddenly created a genuine opportunity to reach the final.

With the score tied 3-3, every attack became crucial. Neither side wanted to make the mistake that could decide the match.

And then came the moment India had been waiting for.

Abhishek delivers when it matters most

With the clock approaching the final whistle, Abhishek produced the decisive moment.

The Indian forward scored from open play in the final minute to restore India’s lead at 4-3. Pakistan had almost completed one of the most remarkable comebacks of the tournament, but Abhishek’s late strike changed everything again.

The goal triggered celebrations among the Indian players as Pakistan were left with almost no time to respond.

The final whistle confirmed India’s 4-3 victory.

For Abhishek, it was a goal that will be remembered for a long time. For India, it was another victory in a rivalry that rarely produces a quiet evening.

India have now extended their unbeaten run against Pakistan to 21 matches, according to India Today.

Harmanpreet’s two goals prove crucial

While Abhishek scored the goal that ultimately decided the semifinal, Harmanpreet Singh’s contribution was equally important.

The Indian captain scored twice from penalty corners during the opening stages, giving India the early platform they needed.

Sukhjeet’s field goal then pushed the score to 3-0 before Pakistan’s remarkable comeback.

That combination of penalty-corner efficiency and open-play attacking helped India establish a strong position early, although the team will also know that surrendering a three-goal lead will be an area to address before the final.

The semifinal showed both sides of India’s performance: attacking quality in the first half and resilience under enormous pressure late in the match.

A historic Asian Games moment after 28 years

India’s men’s team reaching the final is significant on its own, but there is another reason this Asian Games campaign has attracted attention.

For the first time since the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, both India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams have reached the final in the same edition of the Asian Games.

The women’s team booked its place in the final one day earlier by defeating South Korea 2-0. India will meet China in the women’s gold-medal match.

The historical comparison is particularly interesting because India’s men’s team won gold at Bangkok 1998, while the women’s team claimed silver. Hockey India’s historical records confirm those results.

Twenty-eight years later, both teams once again have the opportunity to fight for Asian Games gold in the same edition.

Final now carries Olympic qualification significance

There is even more at stake than the Asian Games medals.

The hockey tournament in Aichi-Nagoya also provides an important route towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The FIH has stated that the continental champions at the Asian Games earn direct qualification for LA28.

That makes Saturday’s men’s final particularly important for India.

The team already has a medal guaranteed, but the ultimate target will be the gold medal and the direct Olympic qualification that comes with it.

India entered the tournament as defending Asian Games champions after winning gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Games. Hockey India’s records show that the men’s team won the title in 2022, while India have a long history of success in the Asian Games hockey competition.

Now they are one victory away from another gold medal.

India must recover quickly for the final

The 4-3 semifinal victory will undoubtedly provide confidence, but it also highlighted areas India cannot ignore.

Building a 3-0 lead and then allowing Pakistan to level the match will serve as a warning. At the highest level, a final can turn on a single defensive mistake or missed opportunity.

India eventually found the answer through Abhishek’s late goal, but the final is likely to demand greater control from the opening whistle until the last minute.

The identity of India’s opponent will be confirmed after the second men’s semifinal between Malaysia and South Korea. The men’s gold-medal match is scheduled for Saturday, October 3.

For now, though, Indian hockey fans can celebrate a memorable night.

India were three goals ahead.

Pakistan fought all the way back.

The match was tied 3-3.

And when the game needed a hero, Abhishek stepped up in the final minute.

The 4-3 scoreline will go into the record books, but the manner of the victory is what made this semifinal special.

India are in the Asian Games 2026 men’s hockey final — and after 28 years, both Indian hockey teams are once again playing for gold in the same Asian Games edition.
