The Asian Games 2026 cricket tournament has already produced one of the strangest stories of the competition. China’s women’s cricket team have been eliminated from the tournament without playing a single ball.
China were scheduled to face Bangladesh in the first quarter-final of the women’s T20 cricket competition at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Aichi, on September 17. However, persistent rain and a wet outfield made it impossible for the match to begin. After repeated inspections, officials eventually called off the game without a ball being bowled.
The result may sound unusual, but the Asian Games cricket playing conditions had already provided a clear answer for such a situation. Since Bangladesh entered the match with a higher international ranking than China, Bangladesh advanced directly to the semi-finals.
For China, their Asian Games 2026 campaign was over before it had really started.
What happened in the China vs Bangladesh quarter-final?
The women’s cricket competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games began on September 17, two days before the official opening ceremony of the Games on September 19.
Bangladesh and China were drawn to play the opening quarter-final at Korogi Sports Park. But weather had already been a problem around the venue, and conditions did not improve enough for cricket to be played.
The outfield remained wet, leaving officials with no realistic opportunity to start the game. Eventually, the match was abandoned without the toss and without a single delivery being bowled.
That created an unusual situation: one team had to progress to the semi-finals even though neither side had batted, bowled or fielded.
This is where the tournament’s playing conditions became decisive.
Why did Bangladesh qualify while China were eliminated?
The answer lies in Rule 16.10.2(b) of the Asian Games cricket playing conditions.
When a knockout match cannot be completed because of circumstances such as rain, the higher-ranked team progresses to the next round. This provision was particularly important in this match because the women’s competition is being played as a straight knockout tournament involving eight teams.
Bangladesh therefore benefited from their superior position in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings.
At the time of the match, Bangladesh were ranked 10th while China were ranked 36th, according to reports on the abandoned quarter-final. With no cricket possible, Bangladesh’s higher ranking became the deciding factor.
So, technically, China did not lose the match on the field.
There was no scorecard, no dismissal and no winning run. Instead, the tournament rules determined which team would continue.
For Bangladesh, it means a place in the last four. For China, it means their Asian Games cricket campaign is already finished.
A particularly frustrating exit for China
The circumstances will make the elimination especially disappointing for the Chinese players.
China are making their third Asian Games cricket appearance since 2010, but this time their campaign ended before they could demonstrate what they had prepared for.
A knockout match is always high-pressure, and playing against a higher-ranked opponent would have given China an opportunity to test themselves at a major multi-sport event. Instead, weather conditions removed that opportunity completely.
The result also highlights how important tournament regulations can become when knockout cricket is interrupted by bad weather.
In a league competition, a washout can result in both teams receiving points. But in a knockout tournament, there must be a method to determine who moves forward. At the Asian Games, the ranking provision provides that solution.
Bangladesh now wait for India’s quarter-final result
Bangladesh’s reward for progressing is a place in the women’s semi-finals on September 20.
Their potential opponent could be India, although that depends on the result of India’s quarter-final against hosts Japan.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Indian team are scheduled to face Japan on September 18 at Korogi Sports Park. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM local time, which is 10:30 AM IST.
If India beat Japan, the defending Asian Games champions will move into the semi-finals and could meet Bangladesh.
India won the women’s cricket gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and are once again entering the competition as one of the teams expected to challenge for the medals. The women’s tournament features eight teams and runs from September 17 to September 22.
The other side of the knockout bracket features Pakistan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
Pakistan were scheduled to face Thailand in the second quarter-final on September 17, while Sri Lanka and Malaysia are scheduled to meet on September 18. The semi-finals are scheduled for September 20, followed by the bronze-medal match and final on September 22.
China are out of cricket at the 2026 Asian Games
China’s elimination also means there will be no further Chinese involvement in the cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games.
The men’s tournament is separate and features 10 teams, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh receiving direct entry into the quarter-final stage. China are not among the participating men’s teams.
That makes the abandoned women’s quarter-final the end of China’s entire cricket campaign at these Games.
It is an unusual way for a team to leave a major tournament, but weather is one of the unavoidable realities of outdoor sport. Cricket has seen important matches decided or disrupted by rain many times before, and the Asian Games organisers had to rely on the competition’s playing conditions to keep the knockout tournament moving.
For Bangladesh, meanwhile, the focus now shifts towards the semi-finals. They have secured their place in the last four without taking the field, but the next stage will require them to win a match if they want to reach the gold-medal game.
