Ireland leg-spinner Ben White retires at 28 to start a new career in software

Ireland leg-spinner Ben White announces retirement from professional cricket at 28 to begin a new career at Personio.

Ireland leg-spinner Ben White has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 28, bringing an end to an international career that included 38 T20 internationals and appearances in three ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squads. The wrist-spinner is moving into the corporate world, having taken up a new role at software company Personio as a Business Development Representative for the UK and Ireland.

White announced his decision on October 28, 2026, after his last international appearance for Ireland against Bangladesh in December 2025. His decision marks a significant career change for a player who was once viewed as a long-term option to strengthen Ireland’s wrist-spin attack.

Although his international career was relatively short, White experienced cricket at the highest level across all three formats. He finished with 41 international wickets and earned 43 international appearances for Ireland.

Ben White’s international career and T20 World Cup journey

White made his T20 international debut against South Africa in Belfast in July 2021. A right-arm leg-spinner, he quickly became part of Ireland’s plans in the shortest format, using changes of pace, flight and bounce to challenge opposing batters.

His strongest numbers came in T20 internationals, where he claimed 36 wickets in 38 matches. His best bowling figures were 4/20 against Afghanistan in 2024, one of the standout performances of his international career.

White was also selected for Ireland’s squads at the 2021, 2024 and 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups. Being part of three World Cup campaigns was a notable achievement, even though his opportunities to play in the tournaments themselves were limited.

His career also included opportunities in Test and ODI cricket. White made his Test debut against Bangladesh in April 2023 and played three Tests that year. He also featured in two ODIs, making his debut in the format against Oman in June 2023.

Red-ball cricket proved more challenging. White took four wickets in three Tests, with a bowling average of 109.00. The figures reflected the difficulties he faced in adapting his wrist-spin to the longer format, although his performances in T20 cricket offered a clearer picture of his strengths.

Why Ben White decided to leave cricket

White shared his retirement announcement on LinkedIn, describing his time representing Ireland as a remarkable journey and confirming that he was ready to begin a new chapter outside professional sport.

He expressed gratitude to Cricket Ireland for giving him the opportunity to fulfil his childhood dream of representing his country. He also highlighted the memories, lessons and friendships he gained throughout his playing career.

His move to Personio represents a shift from the demands of professional cricket to a business development role in the technology sector. The position will see him pursue a different professional path after years spent training, travelling and competing at international level.

For athletes, the transition away from elite sport can be a major decision. Professional cricket requires years of preparation, discipline and commitment, but it does not always provide a long-term career for every player. Moving into a corporate role can offer new opportunities to develop skills and build a career beyond the boundary.

White’s decision also highlights the different paths available to cricketers once their playing days come to an end. Rather than continuing to pursue opportunities in domestic or franchise cricket, he has chosen to focus on a new profession.

Gary Wilson pays tribute to Ireland’s former spinner

Ireland men’s head coach Gary Wilson praised White’s contribution to the national team and acknowledged the effort he put into achieving his international ambitions.

Wilson said White would be remembered particularly for his T20 performances, highlighting his ability to generate bounce and bowl at pace. Those qualities made him a difficult opponent for batters and helped him earn selection for three T20 World Cup squads.

The coach also recognised the dedication White showed throughout his career, noting that representing Ireland at the international level was a dream he worked hard to achieve.

White’s departure leaves Ireland without a familiar option in their leg-spin resources. His record in T20 internationals demonstrated his ability to contribute wickets, particularly when his variations allowed him to disrupt established batting partnerships.

While his international numbers were not equally strong across every format, his 36 T20I wickets remain a meaningful part of his contribution to Irish cricket.

Ben White’s retirement marks a new beginning

At 28, White has made a decision that takes him away from the cricket field and into a completely different working environment. His journey from international leg-spinner to a software company’s business development representative is a reminder that sporting careers can take unexpected turns.

For Ireland, his retirement closes a chapter that included three T20 World Cup campaigns and opportunities to represent the country in Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals. For White, it opens the door to a fresh professional challenge.

His cricketing journey may be over, but the experience of competing internationally and working within a team environment could prove valuable in his next career.
