Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif found himself at the centre of a social media debate after congratulating the national cricket team for its four-wicket victory over India in the Hong Kong Sixes 2026 on Friday, October 30. While Pakistan’s players celebrated an emphatic win in the six-over contest, Sharif’s congratulatory message on X attracted a wave of sarcastic reactions, with several users questioning the significance of the tournament victory.
The India vs Pakistan Hong Kong Sixes 2026 match produced plenty of entertainment, featuring aggressive batting, quick wickets and a remarkable run chase. Pakistan chased down India’s target of 89 in just 3.5 overs, winning the Group C encounter by four wickets at Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.
However, much of the online conversation following the match shifted towards the Prime Minister’s reaction. Some social media users mocked the celebrations, while others used humour to suggest that the victory deserved a national holiday.
Shehbaz Sharif congratulates Pakistan after India victory
Soon after Pakistan defeated India, Shehbaz Sharif took to X to congratulate the players and acknowledge the Pakistan Cricket Board’s efforts.
“Congratulations to our boys on a superb four-wicket victory over India in the opening clash of the Hong Kong Sixes 2026! It was a good game of cricket,” Sharif wrote.
He also praised PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and his team for their efforts in preparing and supporting the players.
Although the message was intended as a congratulatory note following a sporting victory, it quickly became a talking point among cricket fans. Several users responded with sarcastic comments, particularly because the Hong Kong Sixes is a specialised six-a-side competition rather than a traditional international cricket series.
One social media reaction suggested that the government should “declare a national holiday” following the victory. Other comments used exaggerated congratulations to poke fun at the celebrations.
The reactions reflected the familiar intensity surrounding India-Pakistan cricket rivalry, where even matches outside major international competitions can generate considerable attention.
How Pakistan defeated India in the Hong Kong Sixes 2026
The match itself was a one-sided contest in terms of the final run chase, although India produced an impressive batting performance during the first innings.
After winning the toss, Pakistan captain Abbas Afridi elected to bowl first. India managed to score 88/5 in their allotted six overs, with Shashank Singh delivering the standout performance.
The Indian batter smashed 40 runs from just 11 deliveries, including five sixes and two boundaries. His explosive innings helped India maintain a strong scoring rate despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
Nitish Rana contributed 19 runs from 14 balls, while T. Natarajan remained unbeaten on 12 from six deliveries. However, India’s middle-order collapse towards the end prevented the team from pushing its total beyond 90.
Pakistan’s bowling attack also made important contributions. Abdul Samad picked up two wickets, while Ahmed Daniyal and Muhammad Shahzad claimed one wicket each.
In response, Pakistan made light work of the target. The team reached 91/2 in just 3.5 overs, recording a remarkable scoring rate of more than 23 runs per over.
Khawaja Nafay led the charge with an explosive 41 off 12 deliveries, hitting five sixes and two fours. Captain Abbas Afridi was equally destructive, smashing 35 runs from only eight balls, including five sixes.
Although Shashank Singh dismissed Abbas Afridi, Pakistan had already taken control of the chase. Nafay was dismissed by Rahul Tewatia, but the remaining batters completed the job without further trouble.
Abdul Samad remained unbeaten on seven, while Irfan Khan contributed an unbeaten six from just one delivery.
Abbas Afridi was named Player of the Match for his match-winning contribution with the bat.
Why the Hong Kong Sixes victory became a talking point
The Hong Kong Sixes is a fast-paced international cricket tournament organised by Cricket Hong Kong, China, and sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. Unlike conventional international cricket, the competition features six players per side and six overs per innings.
The 2026 edition runs from October 30 to November 1 and features 12 national teams, including India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The tournament has a long history, having first been established in 1992. Its unique format encourages attacking cricket, with batters expected to score quickly and bowlers facing considerable pressure in a short contest.
That distinction became particularly relevant after Sharif’s congratulatory post attracted attention. While beating India remains a significant achievement for Pakistan supporters, some fans felt that the political reaction was excessive for a match played in a specialised exhibition-style format.
It is also important to remember that the Hong Kong Sixes result does not change the record of India and Pakistan in major ICC tournaments or the Asia Cup. The six-a-side competition has its own format and should be viewed separately from traditional international cricket.
For Pakistan, however, the victory provided an encouraging moment in a tournament where the team entered as defending champions. India, meanwhile, will look to respond in its remaining fixtures.
The social media debate surrounding Shehbaz Sharif’s post once again demonstrated how closely cricket and public reactions remain connected whenever India and Pakistan meet on the field.
