Mohammad Rizwan Faces Fresh Trouble as Lahore High Court Dismisses Plea Against NCCIA Summons

Mohammad Rizwan and Pakistan cricket have been caught in another off-field storm after the wicketkeeper-batter challenged a National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) summons linked to the team’s troubled England tour. However, the Lahore High Court has now dismissed Rizwan’s petition, adding another twist to a case that has already raised questions around dressing-room leaks, player conduct and the handling of Pakistan cricket’s internal investigations.

The controversy began after Pakistan’s disastrous Test tour of England, where the team eventually suffered a 3-0 series whitewash. The situation became even more dramatic after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made sweeping changes following the first two Tests, sending seven players home and replacing members of the coaching staff before the final match.

Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Ali Agha were among those released from the Test squad. Rizwan’s subsequent appearance before the NCCIA brought a completely different dimension to the story.

Why was Mohammad Rizwan summoned by the NCCIA?

According to reports, the NCCIA investigation is connected to alleged leaks of information from Pakistan’s dressing room during the England series and other information surrounding the tour. Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq appeared before the agency in Lahore earlier this month and were questioned as part of the investigation.

The players were reportedly given detailed questionnaires seeking information about their activities, contacts, travel and financial matters. The exact allegations against individual players have not been publicly established, and the investigation remains separate from the broader disciplinary process being conducted by the PCB.

That distinction is important.

There have been reports and speculation connecting the England tour investigation with serious allegations, including possible misconduct. However, there is currently no established finding that Mohammad Rizwan was involved in match-fixing. The NCCIA investigation has been reported primarily in connection with alleged information leaks and digital evidence, while the PCB is conducting its own disciplinary review.

Reports also said that the mobile phones of Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq were handed over for examination as part of the investigation.

Rizwan questioned the NCCIA proceedings

Rizwan subsequently challenged the summons before the Lahore High Court. His legal challenge questioned the basis and jurisdiction of the NCCIA investigation and argued that no specific allegation had been clearly communicated to him.

According to reports, Rizwan also questioned why he had been summoned and raised concerns surrounding his mobile phone and the information sought from him during the investigation. He asked the court to stop the NCCIA proceedings while his petition was being considered.

But the legal challenge did not go his way.

On September 17, the Lahore High Court dismissed Rizwan’s petition. Reports said Chief Justice Aalia Neelum heard the matter, while Rizwan himself was not present in court and his lawyer appeared on his behalf. The court treated the petition as inadmissible and directed the legal process concerning the notice to continue rather than granting Rizwan the requested relief.

That means the dismissal of the petition should not be interpreted as a finding that Rizwan committed any wrongdoing. It simply means his challenge to the NCCIA notice did not succeed at this stage.

Pakistan’s England tour turned into a major crisis

The background to the investigation is Pakistan’s chaotic England tour.

Pakistan lost the first Test by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley before suffering another heavy defeat at Lord’s. England won the second Test by 194 runs, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The response from the PCB was extraordinary.

Seven players were released from the touring squad ahead of the third Test. Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar and Khurram Shahzad were sent back to Pakistan.

The PCB also made changes to the coaching setup. Sarfaraz Ahmed was replaced as red-ball head coach by Mike Hesson, while Umar Gul was replaced by Ashley Noffke. Five of the seven replacements brought into the squad were uncapped at Test level.

The drastic changes attracted huge attention because Pakistan had already lost the series before the third Test was played.

And even after all those changes, Pakistan could not turn things around.

England won the final Test at Edgbaston by eight wickets to complete a 3-0 series sweep. Joe Root and Jordan Cox guided England through the chase, while Pakistan ended a deeply disappointing tour without a single Test victory.

What happens next for Mohammad Rizwan?

The dismissal of Rizwan’s Lahore High Court petition does not bring the NCCIA investigation to an end.

The agency’s investigation and the PCB’s disciplinary process can continue, with further developments expected once the relevant evidence and reports are examined.

The situation is particularly significant for Rizwan because he remains one of Pakistan’s most experienced cricketers and has been an important figure across formats. During the England Test series, however, his performances were underwhelming. He scored only 61 runs across four innings before being sent home from the tour.

For now, it is important to separate confirmed developments from speculation. Rizwan has challenged the NCCIA proceedings, his petition has been dismissed, and the investigation is continuing. There has been no publicly established finding that he committed match-fixing.

Pakistan cricket now has to deal with both the sporting fallout from the England series and the questions surrounding its internal investigations.

The coming weeks could therefore be crucial. The NCCIA’s findings, any forensic examination of digital evidence and the PCB’s own disciplinary review could determine what happens next for Rizwan and any other players involved in the wider inquiry.
