IPL 2027 head coaches list: All 10 teams confirm their coaches

IPL 2027 Head Coaches: The coaching picture for the 20th edition of the Indian Premier League is now complete. Delhi Capitals have appointed former India captain Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach, meaning all 10 IPL franchises now have their head coaches in place for the 2027 season.

Ganguly’s appointment is one of the biggest coaching developments ahead of IPL 2027. Delhi Capitals confirmed the move on October 6, with the former India captain replacing Hemang Badani. Ganguly has already been closely associated with the Capitals setup since 2019, when he joined the franchise as an adviser. He later served as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams.

The new role represents another major step in Ganguly’s coaching career. He has extensive experience in Indian cricket administration and leadership, while his recent coaching work with Pretoria Capitals in SA20 also gave him an opportunity to work directly with a T20 franchise. His appointment now gives Delhi a high-profile figure to lead their campaign as they continue their search for a maiden IPL title.

Delhi Capitals finished sixth in IPL 2026 and will be hoping that Ganguly’s arrival can provide a fresh direction. The former India captain has already made it clear that his aim is to build a strong and fearless team, making the upcoming auction and squad planning particularly important for the franchise.

The other major coaching change comes at Chennai Super Kings. The five-time champions have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach after ending their long association with Stephen Fleming. Fleming had been a key figure in CSK’s success for many years, so Zaheer’s arrival marks a significant change in the franchise’s coaching structure.

With these two major appointments completed, all 10 IPL 2027 teams now have their head coaches confirmed.

The list shows an interesting mix of Indian and overseas coaching experience. Four of the 10 head coaches are Indian: Zaheer Khan, Sourav Ganguly, Ashish Nehra and Abhishek Nayar. The remaining six positions are held by overseas coaches — Justin Langer, Mahela Jayawardene, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, Andy Flower and Daniel Vettori.

For several franchises, continuity remains the key theme. Gujarat Titans continue with Ashish Nehra, while Mumbai Indians have Mahela Jayawardene at the helm. Punjab Kings are set to continue with Ricky Ponting, Rajasthan Royals with Kumar Sangakkara, Royal Challengers Bengaluru with Andy Flower and Sunrisers Hyderabad with Daniel Vettori. Lucknow Super Giants will continue with Justin Langer, according to the current IPL 2027 coaching list.

The biggest spotlight, however, will naturally be on Ganguly and Zaheer. Both are legendary former India players who now face the challenge of guiding IPL franchises from the coaching box.

For Ganguly, the challenge at Delhi is particularly interesting. He knows the franchise and its internal structure extremely well, having occupied several senior positions over the years. That familiarity could help him quickly establish his plans, but the pressure will be significant because Delhi Capitals are still waiting for their first IPL trophy.

Zaheer’s appointment at Chennai is equally intriguing. CSK are moving into a new coaching era after the departure of Fleming, making the transition one of the major storylines heading into IPL 2027. Zaheer brings years of experience as a player and has also worked within the IPL coaching environment, which could prove valuable as he takes charge of one of the competition’s most successful franchises.

Now that the head coach positions are settled, the attention will shift towards squad building. Franchises will have to assess their current combinations, identify players they want to retain and decide where changes are required. The coaching teams will play an important role in those discussions, particularly when it comes to identifying the right balance between Indian and overseas players.

For Delhi Capitals, Ganguly’s arrival could influence the team’s approach to the auction and player development. For CSK, Zaheer will be tasked with helping the franchise build a new chapter after the end of the Fleming era. Those two coaching changes alone could have a major impact on how the teams approach IPL 2027.

With experienced names spread across all 10 franchises, the coaching battle could become one of the most fascinating subplots of the upcoming season. There is also a clear contrast between established overseas coaches and a new generation of Indian coaches taking on major responsibilities.

For fans, the biggest question is now simple: which coach can make the biggest difference in IPL 2027? Ganguly’s leadership at Delhi, Zaheer’s new era at CSK, Nehra’s continued influence at Gujarat, or the experience of coaches such as Ponting, Sangakkara and Jayawardene?

The IPL 2027 season is still some time away, but the foundations are already being laid. With all 10 head coach positions now filled, the next big moves will come through squad planning, player decisions and auction strategy.
