The second round will then feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each team will play every other side in its group.
The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7 stage. One additional team will also progress as the next best-performing side across the two groups. That creates a seven-team Super 7 competition.
The Super 7 will consist of 21 round-robin matches. The top four teams will then qualify for the semi-finals, followed by the final.
So, if India and Pakistan are placed in the same group, their meeting would be part of the second stage of the tournament rather than simply being described as one of two conventional opening groups.
Where will the 2027 World Cup be played?
The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
It will be the first men’s ODI World Cup in Africa since 2003 and will feature matches across 12 venues. The ICC has confirmed eight venues in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia.
The confirmed South African venues include Johannesburg, Centurion, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Paarl and East London.
Zimbabwe will host matches in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, while Namibia’s capital Windhoek will also stage World Cup action.
The return of the World Cup to Africa after 24 years adds another interesting element to the 2027 tournament. The ICC has also promoted the event under the “Three Nations, One Heartbeat” identity.
When will the 2027 World Cup schedule be announced?
The wait for the official schedule is almost over.
The ICC and Cricket South Africa are scheduled to unveil the complete World Cup schedule in Cape Town on October 1, 2026. Reports indicate that the programme is scheduled for 6pm local time, which is around 9:30pm IST and 9pm Pakistan Standard Time.
The event will also coincide with the official one-year countdown to the tournament.
Reports have indicated that the tournament is expected to begin in early October 2027, with November 21 reported as the planned final date. The exact calendar is expected to become clearer with the official announcement.
The schedule announcement is also expected to provide clarity on ticketing, venues and the highly anticipated India-Pakistan fixture.
Virat Kohli could feature in another India-Pakistan World Cup match
There is an additional storyline that could make the 2027 fixture even more significant for Indian cricket fans.
Virat Kohli has announced that the 2027 World Cup will be his final appearance for India in the 50-over format. Reuters reported that the former India captain, who has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, intends to play only ODIs at international level.
If India and Pakistan are indeed placed in the same group, a World Cup clash between the two sides could therefore become one of the major occasions of Kohli’s final ODI campaign.
