Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma next ODI: how long will fans have to wait?
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have become rare sights in Indian cricket. The two modern-day greats have moved away from Test and T20I cricket and now feature only in ODIs. That makes every series involving them a much bigger occasion for fans.
The latest India vs West Indies ODI series gave supporters another opportunity to watch the two stars together. India won the three-match series 2-1, although West Indies avoided a clean sweep by winning the final game in New Chandigarh. Now, however, the wait begins again.
India’s five-match T20I series against West Indies will start on October 6, but neither Kohli nor Rohit is part of the T20I squad. BCCI selected them only for the ODI leg of the West Indies tour, while Shreyas Iyer will lead the T20I side.
So, the obvious question for fans is: when will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma be seen playing for India again?
32 days before the next scheduled ODI
The answer is not as long as some fans might fear.
India’s next scheduled ODI assignment comes on the tour of New Zealand. The first ODI is scheduled for November 4 in Auckland, followed by matches in Wellington on November 7, Hamilton on November 10, and Mount Maunganui on November 13 and 15.
That means there will be a gap of 32 days between India’s third ODI against West Indies on October 3 and the first ODI against New Zealand on November 4.
For fans who have become accustomed to seeing Kohli and Rohit only occasionally, 32 days is still a considerable wait. But compared with some of the gaps that could have occurred in the current calendar, it is relatively manageable.
The bigger question is whether both players will actually be selected for the New Zealand ODI series. The schedule provides the next opportunity, but selection for a future series cannot be treated as confirmed until the BCCI announces the squad.
West Indies series showed why their presence still matters
The West Indies series was another reminder of the value these two veterans can bring to India’s ODI campaign.
Virat Kohli returned to the ODI side after missing the previous period of international white-ball cricket, while Rohit Sharma was also back in India’s plans. BCCI’s original ODI squad for the West Indies included both players alongside captain Shubman Gill.
The first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram ended with India winning by eight wickets. The second match in Guwahati produced one of the most remarkable batting performances of India’s recent ODI history, with Shubman Gill smashing an unbeaten 223 as India chased down 406 with eight wickets in hand.
The third ODI was a different story. India posted 351/7, powered by KL Rahul’s unbeaten 129 and Rohit Sharma’s 92, but West Indies chased down the target to record a five-wicket victory.
Kohli’s presence also remained one of the biggest talking points throughout the series. The former India captain continued to attract enormous attention every time he walked out to bat, underlining how much interest surrounds the veteran even at this stage of his career.
Why every ODI series has become important for Kohli and Rohit
The situation is very different from a few years ago.
Earlier, fans could expect to see Kohli and Rohit across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. Now, every ODI series has additional significance because these matches are effectively their only route to represent India at international level.
The timing is also important.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is approaching, and India will be one of the teams expected to challenge for the title. The tournament schedule has already been announced, with the World Cup set to begin in October 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. India are scheduled to face Australia in Cape Town on October 7 and Pakistan in Johannesburg on October 10.
For Kohli and Rohit, the next year is therefore not simply about playing occasional ODI series. It is about maintaining form, fitness and consistency while India builds towards the biggest ODI tournament on the calendar.
That makes every appearance valuable.
There are more ODIs after New Zealand
The New Zealand tour is not the end of India’s ODI calendar.
BCCI’s home-season schedule shows that India will host Sri Lanka for three ODIs in December 2026. The first will be played in Delhi on December 13, followed by matches in Bengaluru on December 16 and Ahmedabad on December 19.
India will then host Zimbabwe for another three-match ODI series in January 2027. Those matches are scheduled for Kolkata on January 3, Hyderabad on January 6 and Mumbai on January 9.
So, if Kohli and Rohit remain part of India’s ODI plans, fans could potentially see them in three separate ODI assignments between November and January.
That is encouraging news for supporters who feared that their appearances would become extremely rare.
However, it is also important not to assume that both veterans will necessarily play every match. At this stage of their careers, workload management, fitness, team combination and World Cup planning could all influence selection.
The countdown to 2027 has already started
India’s ODI calendar is now increasingly being viewed through the lens of the 2027 World Cup.
The ICC has confirmed that the tournament will be played across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the final scheduled for November 21, 2027.
For India, the challenge is to build a strong enough squad around Gill and the younger generation while making the most of the experience still available in players such as Kohli and Rohit.
That balance could become one of the most interesting storylines in Indian cricket over the next year.
Gill has already taken over the ODI captaincy, while Kohli and Rohit now operate as senior batters rather than the central figures they once were. Their experience can still be extremely valuable, particularly in high-pressure games and major tournaments.
But the clock is ticking.
Every ODI they play between now and the 2027 World Cup could become part of the larger story of India’s preparation for the tournament.
So when will fans see Kohli and Rohit again?
The immediate answer is November 4, 2026, when India are scheduled to play New Zealand in the first ODI in Auckland.
From the end of the West Indies ODI series on October 3, fans will have to wait 32 days for the next scheduled ODI opportunity.
The five T20Is against West Indies will take place in October, but Kohli and Rohit are not included in India’s T20I squad. After that, India’s attention will shift to New Zealand, where the five-match ODI series could provide the next chapter in the careers of two of India’s greatest limited-overs batters.
And this time, the wait may feel even more significant because the countdown to the 2027 ODI World Cup has already begun.
For Indian fans, 32 days might feel long when two of the game’s biggest stars are involved. But the good news is that another ODI series is already on the calendar.
If Kohli and Rohit continue to be part of India’s plans, fans could have several more opportunities to watch the pair before the World Cup arrives.
