Tom Kim Asian Games 2026: South Korean golfer takes lead with military exemption on the line

Tom Kim Asian Games 2026: South Korean golf star Tom Kim has put himself in a strong position to fight for Asian Games gold after taking a one-shot lead into the final round of the men’s individual competition in Japan. The 24-year-old produced a brilliant five-under-par 65 at Kasugai Country Club on Friday to move to 12-under overall.

Kim, whose Korean name is Kim Joo-hyung, started the third round two shots behind the overnight leaders. He responded with five birdies and an eagle, although two bogeys prevented him from building an even bigger advantage. His 54-hole score of 198 leaves him one shot ahead of Chinese Taipei’s Wang Wei-hsuan and Japan’s Kazuki Higa.

The final round now carries enormous significance for Kim. A gold medal in either the individual competition or the men’s team event would make him eligible for South Korea’s military-service exemption, potentially allowing him to continue his professional golf career without the interruption of compulsory service.

Tom Kim’s Asian Games charge gathers pace

Kim’s performance is particularly impressive considering the unusual circumstances surrounding his arrival in Japan. He travelled directly from the United States after competing for the International team at the Presidents Cup.

The journey involved a major time-zone change and very little sleep, but Kim still opened the Asian Games with a three-under 67. He followed that with a four-under 66 before producing his best round of the tournament on Friday.

That progression has taken him from being outside the outright lead after the opening two rounds to the top of the leaderboard with just 18 holes remaining.

Kim’s Presidents Cup schedule made his Asian Games preparation even more demanding. He had been one of the International team’s leading performers and left the event early to make his way to Japan.

Despite the difficult turnaround, he has managed to stay focused on the bigger prize in Nagoya.

Why the gold medal matters so much

For most golfers, an Asian Games gold medal would represent a major sporting achievement. For Tom Kim, it could also have a significant impact on the next stage of his career.

South Korean men are generally required to complete mandatory military service. The standard period is around 18 to 21 months, depending on the branch of service. However, athletes who meet the country’s medal-based eligibility requirements can receive an alternative form of service rather than completing the standard military obligation. An Asian Games gold medal is among the achievements that qualify.

The exemption system has previously affected major South Korean sports stars. Tottenham Hotspur legend Son Heung-min, for example, became eligible after South Korea won football gold at the 2018 Asian Games. He subsequently completed only basic military training in 2020.

For a golfer competing at the highest professional level, avoiding a lengthy interruption can be particularly important because maintaining competitive form requires regular tournament play and practice.

Kim already has four PGA Tour victories and has established himself as one of South Korea’s leading young golfers. A lengthy break from professional golf could therefore have a major effect on his schedule and momentum.

Kim has another route to the exemption

The individual leaderboard is not the only competition that matters for Kim.

South Korea is also leading the men’s team event after three rounds. The team competition uses the two best scores from the country’s three players in each round.

After Friday’s third round, South Korea was at 20-under par, one stroke ahead of Japan, with China and Chinese Taipei another two shots behind. Kim’s teammates include Mun Do-yeob and Kim Seong-hyeon, with Mun already having completed his military service.

That means Kim has two opportunities to secure the outcome he is chasing: he can win the individual gold medal or be part of a South Korean team that finishes first.

Kim Seong-hyeon is also seeking the exemption, meaning a South Korean team victory could have major significance for both players.

Speaking about the pressure surrounding the competition, S.H. Kim admitted that the possibility of earning the exemption was making him nervous. He said remaining on the PGA Tour was his goal and that a gold medal would allow him to continue pursuing that career without the interruption of military service.

Tom Kim’s previous Olympic disappointment

This is not the first time Kim has faced an important opportunity to secure an exemption through international competition.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he started strongly and was tied for third after the opening round. However, he eventually finished eighth and did not win an Olympic medal.

That result left Kim visibly emotional, with the Olympics representing another opportunity to avoid the interruption of military service.

Now, two years later, the Asian Games have presented another chance.

The difference this time is that Kim enters the final round as the outright leader rather than chasing the field. His 12-under score gives him a one-shot cushion, but Wang Wei-hsuan and Kazuki Higa remain close enough that the final round could change the picture quickly.

What happens in the final round?

Kim will need to maintain his composure over the final 18 holes. A one-shot lead is hardly decisive in golf, particularly with three players separated by only a single stroke.

Wang and Higa are both at 11-under, while China’s Ding Wenyi is further back at nine-under. South Korea’s Mun Do-yeob is eight-under individually after a third-round 69, while Kim Seong-hyeon is two-under.

The team competition adds another layer to the final round. South Korea’s one-shot advantage over Japan means Kim will be competing for his individual position while simultaneously contributing to his country’s team score.

For Kim, however, the equation is straightforward: gold would secure an outcome that could shape the next phase of his career.

He has already built an impressive résumé at only 24, including four PGA Tour titles and an Asian Tour Order of Merit crown. The opportunity to add an Asian Games gold medal could become one of the most important moments of his career.

The final round will therefore be about much more than a golf tournament.

Tom Kim has 18 holes remaining to turn his one-shot advantage into Asian Games gold — and potentially remove a major interruption from his professional career.
