Manav Suthar Creates First-Class Cricket History After 131 Years, Takes Wickets Without Conceding a Run

Manav Suthar has produced one of the rarest bowling performances in first-class cricket, achieving something that had not been seen for 131 years.

The left-arm spinner represented Warwickshire against Glamorgan in the County Championship and finished the match with three wickets without conceding a single run. What made the performance even more remarkable was that Suthar took wickets in both innings while maintaining a perfect economy of zero.

It is an extraordinary achievement that has only been recorded twice in the history of first-class cricket.

Warwickshire dominated the Division One contest at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, defeating Glamorgan by an innings and 257 runs. Glamorgan were completely outplayed, being dismissed for just 69 in their first innings and 65 in the second.

But amid Warwickshire’s emphatic victory, it was Suthar’s extraordinary spell that created a piece of cricket history.

Suthar’s first-innings contribution was brief but decisive.

The Indian spinner was introduced for only three deliveries and needed just those three balls to make an impact. He bowled Pakistan batter Mir Hamza, giving Warwickshire another wicket during Glamorgan’s collapse.

He returned in the second innings and once again wasted little time.

Suthar was brought into the attack in the 24th over and immediately bowled a maiden. In his following over, he struck twice, dismissing Chris Cook and Jamie McIlroy within four deliveries.

All three of Suthar’s wickets in the match came through bowled dismissals.

Most importantly, not a single run was scored from his bowling.

That means Suthar ended the match with three wickets from his limited opportunities while maintaining figures that are almost unheard of in first-class cricket.

It was not simply a good spell. It was a statistical rarity.

A record that had stood since 1895

The significance of Suthar’s performance becomes clearer when looking back at the history of first-class cricket.

Before the Indian spinner, the last player to achieve this feat was England’s Tom Hayward in 1895.

Playing for Surrey against Leicestershire at The Oval, Hayward took wickets in both innings of the match without conceding a run. He claimed three wickets in total, doing so within just six deliveries across the two innings.

For more than a century, that extraordinary record remained untouched.

Now, 131 years later, Suthar has matched it.

The fact that such a feat has happened only twice in the long history of first-class cricket underlines just how unusual his performance was.

There are plenty of bowlers who have taken wickets without conceding many runs, particularly when they have bowled only a handful of deliveries. But taking at least one wicket in each innings of the same match while conceding zero runs overall is an entirely different level of rarity.

Suthar has now put his name alongside Hayward in that exclusive record.

From Sri Lanka to England in just three days

The performance also came shortly after a busy period for Suthar.

The 26-year-old had only recently completed India’s tour of Sri Lanka before travelling to England. Just three days after the Sri Lanka assignment ended, he arrived in England to resume his County Championship campaign with Warwickshire.

Despite the demanding travel schedule, Suthar has continued to make an impression in county cricket.

In the ongoing County Championship season, he has taken 21 wickets in eight innings for Warwickshire. His tally includes a five-wicket haul against Somerset.

His latest performance against Glamorgan has added another memorable moment to what is becoming an increasingly productive spell in English domestic cricket.

For a young spinner gaining experience outside India, the exposure to English conditions and the demands of first-class cricket can be particularly valuable.

And Suthar is certainly making the most of it.

Suthar’s rapid rise in international cricket

Suthar’s recent form is also part of a bigger story.

The left-arm spinner made an immediate impact on his Test debut against Afghanistan, finishing the match with seven wickets. His performance included a six-wicket haul in an innings and immediately showcased his ability to play a significant role with the ball.

He then continued his impressive run during India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

Suthar claimed 16 wickets across the two Tests, playing a key role as India won the series 1-0.

His performances have made him a player worth watching, particularly as India’s Test setup continues to develop new options across different conditions.

His stint with Warwickshire has provided another opportunity to sharpen his game.

Rather than simply accumulating wickets, the latest performance showed another side of his bowling — the ability to create pressure and strike quickly without giving the opposition any scoring opportunities.

Warwickshire continue their title charge

Suthar’s remarkable performance came during an important victory for Warwickshire.

The team is currently sitting at the top of the County Championship Division One table with 184 points from 12 matches. They are 11 points ahead of second-placed Somerset.

With only two matches remaining, Warwickshire are firmly in contention for the title.

Their final two fixtures will be against Essex and Leicestershire, and the team will now be hoping to maintain its momentum during the closing stages of the season.

The huge victory over Glamorgan certainly strengthened their position.

Warwickshire’s bowlers had little difficulty dismantling Glamorgan, while the batting unit had already put the team in a commanding position by scoring 391 in the first innings.

Glamorgan’s combined scores of 69 and 65 meant the match was effectively over long before the scheduled finish.

For Suthar, however, the significance of the game will extend far beyond Warwickshire’s points tally.

A rare entry in cricket’s record books

Cricket has produced countless extraordinary bowling figures over the decades, but some records stand out simply because of how difficult they are to repeat.

Suthar’s latest achievement belongs in that category.

Taking three wickets in a first-class match is hardly unusual. Taking those wickets without conceding a run is already impressive. But doing so while taking wickets in both innings places the performance in an extremely exclusive category.

Only Tom Hayward had previously achieved the feat, back in 1895.

Now Suthar has done it again — 131 years later.

His Warwickshire spell may have lasted only a handful of deliveries, but those deliveries have secured his place in first-class cricket’s history.

And considering his impressive form in both international and county cricket, this could be another important step in the rise of an Indian spinner who is rapidly making his presence felt beyond home conditions.
