India T20I squad for New Zealand tour: Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns after four years, Dhruv Jurel gets India A captaincy
The India T20I squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour has been announced, and the biggest talking point is the return of veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The experienced seamer is back in the Indian team after nearly four years, while Shreyas Iyer will continue to lead the T20I side.
The BCCI announced the India and India A squads on October 6, confirming a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. India A will simultaneously play three multi-day matches against New Zealand A, with Dhruv Jurel named captain. The squads for the ODI and Test series will be announced separately.
Bhuvneshwar’s selection is particularly interesting because his last international appearance came against New Zealand in December 2022. Since then, the 36-year-old has been outside India’s plans, but his performances in the IPL have helped him earn another opportunity at the international level.
The senior pacer has been included alongside Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, giving India a mix of experience and youth in the pace department.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar makes a surprise comeback
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return is easily the headline selection from India’s New Zealand tour squad.
The swing bowler has been one of India’s most successful T20I pacers, taking 90 wickets in 87 matches while maintaining an economy rate of 6.96. His ability to move the ball in the powerplay and control the death overs has made him a valuable T20 specialist throughout his career.
His recent IPL form has clearly worked in his favour. Bhuvneshwar played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the last two IPL seasons and was an important part of their successful campaigns.
His comeback also gives India a different type of bowling option. While Arshdeep Singh provides left-arm variety, Bhuvneshwar brings experience, swing and the ability to bowl accurately with the new ball.
For a tour of New Zealand, where conditions can offer assistance to seamers, that experience could prove particularly useful.
Shreyas Iyer remains captain
Shreyas Iyer has been retained as India’s T20I captain, with Tilak Varma named vice-captain.
The batting group contains most of India’s established T20 options. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shivam Dube and Axar Patel are all part of the squad.
The selection also provides another opportunity for young players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Naman Dhir and Prince Yadav to establish themselves at international level.
India have also recalled Varun Chakaravarthy after his recent absence due to injury. Kuldeep Yadav has been included as another specialist spin option.
Interestingly, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar have not been selected for the five-match T20I series. The BCCI had already withdrawn Washington from the West Indies T20I squad with the upcoming Test series against New Zealand in mind, allowing him to prepare through red-ball cricket.
Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana are also absent from the New Zealand T20I squad.
India T20I squad for New Zealand tour
Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav.
One of the most interesting battles will be for places in the playing XI. India now have several options across batting, pace and spin, and conditions in New Zealand could influence the final combination.
Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion could be especially significant if India decide to prioritise experienced swing bowling in Christchurch and Wellington.
India vs New Zealand T20I schedule
The five-match series begins on October 22 in Christchurch and concludes on November 1 in Hamilton. The first two games will be played in Christchurch before the teams travel to Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton.
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| October 22 | 1st T20I | Christchurch |
| October 24 | 2nd T20I | Christchurch |
| October 27 | 3rd T20I | Wellington |
| October 30 | 4th T20I | Auckland |
| November 1 | 5th T20I | Hamilton |
This will be India’s first white-ball assignment in New Zealand since 2022. The wider tour is a major one, with India scheduled to play five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests in the country. It will also be India’s first Test cricket tour of New Zealand since 2019.
The T20I series should therefore provide an early indication of how India’s current generation of players adapt to New Zealand conditions.
Dhruv Jurel to lead India A
Alongside the senior T20I squad, the BCCI has announced a strong India A team for the three multi-day matches against New Zealand A.
Dhruv Jurel has been appointed captain, with Rishabh Pant also included subject to fitness clearance. Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan are among the other notable names.
The decision to send several Test players to New Zealand A is significant. India will soon play two Tests against New Zealand, and the India A matches provide an opportunity for players to gain valuable experience in local conditions before the main Test series begins.
The India A squad is:
Dhruv Jurel (captain/wicketkeeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Smaran, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Auqib Nabi, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Manav Suthar, Mukesh Choudhary, Sai Sudharsan, Yash Rathod and Mukesh Kumar.
The three matches will be played between October 24 and November 10, with games scheduled in Lincoln and Christchurch.
| Match | Dates | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Multi-Day Match | October 24-27 | Lincoln |
| 2nd Multi-Day Match | October 31-November 3 | Christchurch |
| 3rd Multi-Day Match | November 7-10 | Lincoln |
The India A programme could prove particularly valuable for players competing for places in India’s Test squad. New Zealand’s conditions are traditionally demanding for visiting batsmen, especially against quality seam bowling, so time in the middle before the Test series could be crucial.
A major test for India’s next generation
The New Zealand tour offers India much more than five T20 matches.
For Bhuvneshwar Kumar, it is an opportunity to show that experience still has a place in India’s fast-changing T20 setup. For younger players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Mayank Yadav, Naman Dhir and Prince Yadav, it is another chance to make a lasting impression.
At the same time, the India A squad gives established Test hopefuls valuable preparation before the senior Test series.
The broader India-New Zealand tour is scheduled to run from October through December, covering T20Is, ODIs and Tests. The ODI series will begin on November 4, followed by the two-Test series beginning in Wellington on November 19.
With Bhuvneshwar Kumar back in the picture and Dhruv Jurel handed the India A captaincy, the selection announcement has provided plenty to discuss even before the first ball is bowled.
For Indian cricket fans, the next few weeks could be particularly interesting as the selectors balance experience with youth across all three formats.
