Fifa UEFA Infantino dispute enters a new legal phase
FIFA and UEFA are locked in an increasingly serious legal and political dispute, with world football’s governing body accusing European football’s governing body of running a “misinformation campaign” and attempting to influence the upcoming FIFA presidential election.
The latest development came after FIFA responded to UEFA’s request for access to documents and evidence connected to the now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal. UEFA has been seeking information through US courts that it says could be relevant to a potential criminal complaint in Switzerland involving FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
The dispute has added another layer of pressure around Infantino, who is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president in March 2027.
FIFA’s latest court filing strongly rejected UEFA’s allegations, describing suggestions that Infantino personally sought to benefit from the FFE proposal as completely unfounded. FIFA also argued that UEFA’s legal request was excessively broad and should be rejected or delayed.
What is the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan?
The FIFA Forward Enterprise became one of the biggest flashpoints in world football during 2026.
The proposal involved creating a new commercial subsidiary that would hold or manage commercial rights linked to major FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup. Private investors were expected to participate in the structure.
FIFA had presented the project as a way of unlocking additional commercial value and generating more money for football development around the world.
Infantino said in July that the proposed FFE structure could create greater commercial value for FIFA competitions and provide additional investment in areas such as football infrastructure, national teams and opportunities for young players. FIFA stressed at the time that the project was still subject to consultation and that no final decision had been made.
However, the proposal quickly faced opposition from several parts of the football community and was eventually shelved.

Why is UEFA seeking FIFA documents?
UEFA’s legal action is focused on obtaining information that could potentially be used in proceedings in Switzerland.
In an August filing, UEFA said it was considering criminal proceedings against Infantino and potentially other FIFA officials and advisers over the FFE proposal. UEFA alleged that the plan had been developed with a small group of advisers and investors and questioned whether normal FIFA governance procedures had been followed.
The European body asked US courts for permission to obtain documents and testimony from FIFA-related entities based in the United States.
UEFA’s request is particularly significant because the information could potentially help it determine whether further legal action should be taken. However, a request for discovery is not itself a finding of wrongdoing, and the allegations made by UEFA remain disputed by FIFA.

FIFA strongly rejects UEFA’s allegations
FIFA’s latest response has made the divide between the two organisations even clearer.
In its court filing, FIFA said UEFA’s earlier submission contained numerous false or misleading statements about FIFA and Infantino. FIFA specifically rejected the suggestion that Infantino had attempted to profit personally from the FFE proposal.
The governing body also argued that UEFA’s discovery application was far too broad and said similar requests had been rejected by US courts in other cases.
FIFA has previously described UEFA’s legal campaign as a “smear campaign”, while its latest filing again challenged the basis of UEFA’s allegations.
UEFA, meanwhile, has maintained its concerns about the governance and structure of the abandoned project. BBC Sport reported that UEFA had been considering legal action and that the organisation had formally sought preservation of potentially relevant FIFA documents and communications.
So far, neither side has secured a final ruling establishing the truth of the competing allegations.
The FIFA presidential election adds another dimension
The timing of the dispute is particularly important.
Infantino is seeking re-election as FIFA president in March 2027. The election is expected to take place in Morocco, with the deadline for potential candidates to enter the race set for 18 November 2026.
UEFA has emerged as one of the strongest institutional critics of Infantino following the FFE episode. Other football bodies have also expressed concerns about aspects of FIFA’s recent decision-making.
FIFA, however, says UEFA’s legal campaign is being used to influence the presidential race.

Infantino has defended the underlying objective of generating more resources for football development, while critics have questioned the way the proposal was developed and communicated.
