Christian Wade closes in on premiership try record after explosive opening round
Christian Wade has wasted little time reminding rugby fans exactly why he has been one of the most dangerous finishers in Premiership history.
The Newcastle Red Bulls winger scored twice in a remarkable opening-round defeat by Northampton Saints, taking his career Premiership tally to 97 tries and leaving him just four behind the competition’s all-time record of 101, held by Chris Ashton.
The opening weekend of the new Prem season produced a remarkable 52 tries across five matches, averaging more than 10 tries per game. Four players scored hat-tricks, making it a spectacular start to the campaign.
For Wade, however, the biggest story is personal. At 35, he is now within touching distance of a record that once looked almost untouchable.
Christian Wade moves within four tries of Chris Ashton
Wade’s two tries came during Newcastle’s 59-26 defeat at Northampton Saints, but his individual performance offered plenty of encouragement.
The veteran winger remains one of the quickest and most elusive players in the competition. His ability to accelerate into space and beat defenders continues to make him a serious attacking threat.
According to Newcastle head coach Dan McFarland, Wade’s pace remains a major weapon.
“Christian bounces across in front of people where they can’t lay a finger on him,” McFarland said, highlighting the winger’s ability to accelerate through gaps and create problems for defenders.
Wade now needs only four more tries to draw level with Ashton and five to become the outright leading Premiership try scorer.
That makes every Newcastle appearance potentially significant as the season develops.
The official Premiership Rugby website continues to list Newcastle Red Bulls among the competition’s 10 teams, following Red Bull’s takeover of Newcastle Rugby.

Wade’s 97 tries have been scored across spells with Wasps, Gloucester and Newcastle.
His career has taken him far beyond Premiership Rugby. He played in France for Racing 92, switched codes to rugby league with Wigan Warriors and later spent more than three years pursuing an NFL career with the Buffalo Bills.
He eventually returned to rugby union with Newcastle in December 2025, bringing with him an unusual sporting journey that has stretched across multiple versions of the game.
That experience has also influenced the way he prepares physically and professionally.
McFarland believes Wade’s time in the NFL helped him develop his approach to preparation and recovery. The Newcastle coach also described the winger as an important presence within the team’s leadership group.
That combination of experience, speed and professionalism could prove important if Wade is to complete his chase for the record.
Can Christian Wade break the record this season?
The numbers suggest Wade has a realistic opportunity to reach the milestone if he remains available and Newcastle continue to play an attacking style.
Last season’s leading Premiership try scorers, Northampton’s Tommy Freeman and Saracens’ Noah Caluori, finished with 18 tries apiece. That was the highest season-ending tally for five years.
Freeman has already demonstrated just how quickly the numbers can rise.
The Northampton winger began the new campaign with a hat-trick in the same match in which Wade scored his brace. That took Freeman’s career Premiership total to 58 tries at just 25 years of age.
His continued development could eventually put him into the conversation surrounding the competition’s long-term scoring records.
But for now, the spotlight is firmly on Wade.
If he scores four more tries, he will equal Ashton’s 101. Another try after that would give him sole possession of the Premiership’s career try-scoring record.
The possibility is particularly interesting because Wade is not simply chasing a statistical milestone. He is doing it after a career that has repeatedly taken unexpected turns.
More than 15 years after scoring his first Premiership try for Wasps, he is still capable of producing the acceleration and footwork that made him such a dangerous player in his prime.
His Newcastle return last season produced only two Premiership tries as the club struggled near the bottom of the table. The opening-round performance, however, immediately offered a different picture.
Newcastle may have lost heavily to Northampton, but their willingness to attack could create plenty of opportunities for Wade.
The official Premiership Rugby match records show just how open some Newcastle games have become, with high-scoring encounters featuring numerous tries.
Chris Ashton expects the record to be surpassed
Interestingly, the man currently sitting at the top of the list does not appear to believe his record will remain safe forever.
Ashton has suggested that the Premiership’s modern attacking style could eventually see the record broken by a considerable margin.
He pointed towards Freeman’s age and current scoring rate as an indication of what might be possible for the next generation.
Freeman’s career total has already reached 58, while his recent scoring form shows how quickly a prolific winger can accumulate tries.
That makes Wade’s chase even more fascinating.
The 35-year-old is attempting to break a record while younger players are already building substantial career totals of their own. Whether Wade gets there first or another generation eventually moves the benchmark much higher, the next few seasons could be important for Premiership Rugby’s record books.
For now, though, Wade is only four tries away.
And considering the way he started the campaign, Newcastle supporters will have plenty of reasons to keep watching.
The record chase could become one of the most intriguing individual storylines of the Premiership season. Wade’s next try will take him to 98, two more will put him level with Ashton, and five would make him the new all-time record holder.
After such an explosive opening weekend, the race is officially on.
