Abishek Porel Gets Bail After 36 Days in Custody in Alleged Rape Case: What Happened and What We Know

Abishek Porel bail: Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been granted bail after spending 36 days in custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case. The Bengal cricketer was arrested on August 11 following a complaint filed by a medical student from Karnataka. A Chinsurah court granted him bail after the case had already gone through several stages of investigation and court proceedings.

The development comes more than a month after Porel’s arrest and has put the young cricketer’s legal situation back in the spotlight. It is important to note that the allegations against him remain allegations, and a bail order does not amount to a finding of guilt or innocence.

Abishek Porel gets bail after 36 days

Porel was arrested on August 11 by Mogra police in connection with a complaint filed by a medical student. He was subsequently produced before the Chinsurah court, where his initial bail request was rejected and he was sent into custody. After a three-day police remand, the court later sent him to judicial custody.

According to reports, Porel was granted bail by the Chinsurah court after spending 36 days in custody. SportsTak reported that the bail order came on September 17, with the complainant submitting an affidavit stating that she had no objection to his release. The report also said the police had filed a chargesheet containing digital evidence.

The latest development does not bring the legal case to an end. Bail allows an accused person to remain out of custody while proceedings continue, subject to the conditions imposed by the court.

What are the allegations against Porel?

The case began with a complaint filed by a medical student from Karnataka at Mogra police station on June 23. According to reports based on the complaint, the woman alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that the two had discussed marriage. She further alleged that they had travelled abroad together during the relationship.

The complainant alleged that Porel later denied the relationship and that this led her to approach the police.

Reports have also detailed allegations involving criminal intimidation and the handling of private photographs and electronic material. The Calcutta High Court had earlier directed police to apprehend Porel and another accused and to seize electronic devices amid concerns raised about the possible circulation of the complainant’s private material.

These details come from the complaint and court proceedings and should not be treated as proven findings against Porel.

Why did the Calcutta High Court become involved?

The case had already reached the Calcutta High Court before Porel’s arrest. In July, the court directed the police to apprehend Porel and seize electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, in connection with the allegations. The court’s intervention came after concerns were raised regarding the investigation and the possible dissemination of private photographs and videos.

Porel was eventually arrested from his residence in Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas district. A police official quoted by PTI confirmed at the time that there was a court order for his arrest.

His first appearance before the Chinsurah court did not result in bail. After the expiry of his initial police remand, the court sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.

The matter continued through August. LiveLaw reported on August 31 that Porel’s lawyer had sought an urgent hearing in the High Court after the police filed the chargesheet and electronic devices had been seized. The court declined to give the matter special urgent listing and indicated that the appropriate legal process should be followed for a bail application.

Abishek Porel’s cricket career

Away from the legal proceedings, Porel has established himself as a promising wicketkeeper-batter in Indian domestic cricket.

The 23-year-old has represented Bengal and has been part of the Delhi Capitals setup since 2023. He made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals after joining the franchise as a replacement for injured wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

His IPL numbers have also continued to grow. According to the latest reports, Porel has played 35 IPL matches and scored 769 runs, including four half-centuries. During the 2026 season, he scored 108 runs in four innings for Delhi Capitals.

In domestic cricket, Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season. He has since become an important part of Bengal’s wicketkeeping and batting options. ABP’s latest report lists him with 1,408 runs in 32 first-class matches, while his List A and T20 records have also continued to develop.

What happens next in the case?

The granting of bail does not mean that the criminal case has been dismissed. The legal proceedings can continue while Porel remains outside custody, depending on the court’s bail conditions and the next stages of the case.

The police have already filed a chargesheet, according to recent reports, while electronic devices connected to the investigation have also been seized. The court will continue to deal with the matter according to the applicable legal process.

Porel has previously denied the allegations against him, and the latest reports do not establish a final judicial finding on the accusations.

For cricket fans, the case is therefore separate from Porel’s performance on the field. Any discussion about his future with Bengal or Delhi Capitals will depend on developments in the legal process as well as decisions by the relevant cricket authorities and franchise.

For now, the biggest development is that Abishek Porel has been released on bail after 36 days in custody, while the legal case itself remains ongoing.
