Cristiano Ronaldo found himself at the centre of an unexpected security scare in Riyadh on Monday, October 12, after a missile threat forced a delay to Al-Nassr’s AFC Champions League Elite match against Uzbekistan’s Neftchi Fergana. The game, scheduled to kick off at Al-Awwal Park, was delayed by approximately one hour following a security alert issued by Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence.

Despite the tense situation before kick-off, the match eventually went ahead, and Al-Nassr delivered a 3-1 victory. Ronaldo scored his team’s second goal before half-time, taking his career tally to 981 goals and moving another step closer to the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career goals.

The incident drew attention beyond football, as the security alert came amid heightened tensions following missile attacks attributed to Yemen-based Houthi rebels. The delay disrupted the build-up to a major continental fixture, leaving players and spectators waiting for confirmation that it was safe to proceed.

Riyadh missile alert forces Al-Nassr match to wait

The Al-Nassr vs Neftchi Fergana match was originally scheduled to begin at 9:15 pm local time on Monday. However, preparations were interrupted when Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued a warning about an aerial threat shortly before the scheduled kick-off.

According to reports from the Associated Press and AFP, residents received emergency alerts on their mobile phones advising them to remain calm, move to a safe location and stay away from windows and doors. AFP correspondents also reported hearing explosions in Riyadh around the time of the incident.

The situation created uncertainty around the fixture, with spectators already inside Al-Awwal Park waiting for further instructions. Stadium announcements asked fans to remain in their seats while officials assessed the situation.

The Saudi-led coalition subsequently reported that it had intercepted and destroyed ballistic missiles launched towards Riyadh by the Houthis. Reports indicated that two missiles had been intercepted that day, although the initial security alert did not immediately establish when the match could safely begin.

The game was eventually cleared to proceed after an approximately one-hour delay. What had been expected to be a routine football evening had turned into an unusual night for players, supporters and officials.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 981st career goal

Once the action finally began, Al-Nassr wasted little time making their presence felt. Brazilian forward Angelo Gabriel opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, giving the Saudi side an early advantage.

Ronaldo then doubled the lead in the 42nd minute. The Portuguese superstar finished a well-worked attacking move involving Sadio Mane and Aiman Yahya, putting Al-Nassr in a commanding position before the interval.

The goal was particularly significant because it took Ronaldo’s career tally to 981 goals across club and international football, according to contemporary match reports. At 41, the forward continues to chase the historic 1,000-goal milestone that has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding his career.

For Al-Nassr, Ronaldo’s contribution was important not only because of the scoreline but also because the team had to deal with an unusual pre-match interruption. The experienced forward delivered when his side needed him, helping establish a two-goal cushion before half-time.

The circumstances made the goal even more noteworthy. While attention had initially centred on the security warning and the delayed kick-off, Ronaldo once again provided the headline moment on the pitch.

Neftchi Fergana fight back, but Al-Nassr secure the win

Neftchi Fergana returned for the second half determined to get back into the contest. The Uzbek side found a breakthrough through Alisher Odilov, who scored in the 51st minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

That goal briefly raised the pressure on the hosts. With Neftchi back within one goal, Al-Nassr needed to protect their advantage and avoid allowing the visitors to build further momentum.

However, the contest shifted again when Neftchi midfielder Ikromjon Alibaev was sent off in the 65th minute following a foul on Mohamed Simakan, leaving the visitors with ten players.

Al-Nassr took advantage of their numerical superiority and eventually secured the result in the 78th minute. Neftchi defender Anvarjon Gofurov put the ball into his own net, handing the Saudi side a third goal and effectively settling the match.

The final score was 3-1 in favour of Al-Nassr, with Angelo Gabriel opening the scoring, Ronaldo adding the second and the own goal completing the victory.

The result gave Al-Nassr a positive outcome after a night that had been anything but straightforward. The team managed the disruption before kick-off and then produced the performance required to take all three points.

Security concerns overshadow football in Saudi Arabia

The incident involving Ronaldo’s match highlights how developments away from the pitch can affect major sporting events. Saudi Arabia has faced heightened security concerns amid a series of attacks attributed to the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen.

The reported missile interceptions near Riyadh added to those concerns, with the emergency alerts reminding residents that the situation could affect everyday activities, including sporting fixtures.

The decision to delay the Al-Nassr match demonstrated the importance of assessing potential threats before allowing a large gathering to proceed. Although the fixture eventually went ahead, the interruption showed that even high-profile matches featuring global sporting icons are not insulated from wider regional tensions.

It is important to distinguish between a security alert and a direct attack on the stadium. Available reports said the missiles were directed towards Riyadh and that the Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting them. They did not establish that Al-Awwal Park itself was struck.

For supporters, the priority was naturally the safety of everyone inside and around the venue. The eventual resumption of the match brought the immediate disruption to an end, allowing the teams to complete the fixture.

What Ronaldo’s latest goal means for Al-Nassr

Ronaldo’s latest strike keeps the spotlight on his pursuit of 1,000 career goals. With his tally reported at 981 following the Neftchi Fergana match, he was 19 goals short of the landmark.

The milestone remains a major talking point because of the longevity required to maintain such a scoring record. Ronaldo has continued to find the net late into his career, and his performances for Al-Nassr remain closely followed by football fans around the world.

For Al-Nassr, the 3-1 win also provided a boost in continental competition. A victory is valuable in the AFC Champions League Elite league phase, where results contribute to a team’s chances of progressing to the knockout rounds. The club will now look to build on the result in its upcoming fixtures.

Nevertheless, the main story from Riyadh was about more than three goals and a victory. A missile-related security warning delayed one of the region’s high-profile football matches, before Ronaldo delivered another memorable moment in front of the watching world.
