Jannik sinner ends 2026 season early after knee injury setback

World number one Jannik Sinner has officially brought his 2026 tennis season to an early end after deciding to undergo treatment for an ongoing right knee injury.

The Italian confirmed the decision on Tuesday, saying he and his doctors had concluded that treatment was necessary and that he needed to think about his long-term career rather than rush back onto the court.

Sinner has not played competitively since successfully defending his Wimbledon title in July. His absence had already ruled him out of several major events, including the US Open and the Asian swing, but the latest announcement means he will also miss the final tournaments of the season, including the ATP Finals in Turin.

The 25-year-old made the announcement through a video message on Instagram.

“Me together with the doctors have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee,” Sinner said. “The last couple of years gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be way different.”

He added that his priority was now his long-term career and that he would do everything possible to return at 100%.

The decision is a significant blow for Sinner, particularly because he had been enjoying one of the strongest seasons of his career before the injury interrupted his campaign.

Sinner’s 2026 season had been remarkable. He won six titles across three different surfaces and produced a stunning run during the spring, becoming the first man to win five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. His historic sequence included Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and the Paris Masters from his previous campaign context, establishing an extraordinary level of consistency at the highest level.

His victory over Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final was another major highlight. Sinner recovered from losing the opening set to beat the German 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 and successfully defend his Wimbledon crown. The victory gave him a fifth Grand Slam title and reinforced his position as the leading player in men’s tennis.

However, the physical problem has now forced him to take a different approach.

Sinner’s team confirmed that the treatment is aimed at inflammation in his knee and that the decision was made now to provide enough recovery time before preparations for the 2027 season begin.

That decision could also have a major impact on the ATP world rankings.

Sinner currently sits at number one, but Alexander Zverev is closing the gap. With Sinner unable to compete during the final part of the season, he cannot defend the ranking points he earned during the closing months of 2025.

Zverev therefore has a major opportunity to finish 2026 as the world’s number one player for the first time.

The German has already enjoyed a huge year of his own, winning his maiden French Open title and adding the US Open crown. With Sinner now unable to earn more points, the battle for the year-end number one ranking has become one of the biggest stories of the remaining tennis season.

For Sinner, however, the ranking situation appears to be secondary.

His decision suggests that the bigger objective is making sure the knee problem does not become a long-term issue. At just 25, Sinner has already accumulated five Grand Slam titles and established himself as one of the defining players of his generation.

His 2026 record tells the story of just how dominant he was before the injury became a major concern. He won 44 singles matches and lost only three, while recording a remarkable 10-1 record against top-10 opponents. His only defeat against a top-10 player came against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-final.

That Melbourne defeat was followed by a spectacular response.

Sinner went on an extended winning run and defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo Masters final. The victory was particularly significant because Alcaraz has emerged as Sinner’s biggest generational rival and one of the few players capable of consistently challenging him at the top of the sport.

The pair had faced each other in three of the four Grand Slam finals during the previous year, but their rivalry was unusually quiet in 2026. They met only once, with Sinner winning in Monte Carlo.

The French Open provided one of the few major setbacks of his season. Sinner suffered a surprise second-round defeat against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in difficult hot and humid conditions in Paris. The loss ended a remarkable 30-match winning streak.

He responded perfectly at Wimbledon.

After being pushed to five sets in the opening round, Sinner gradually found his best level and moved through the tournament before producing another memorable performance against Zverev in the final.

That victory now stands as Sinner’s final competitive match of 2026.

There is also an element of unfinished business surrounding the decision. Sinner had been expected to return during the second half of the season and compete for more major titles, but his knee problem continued to prevent that comeback.

Instead, he has chosen recovery over competition.

The timing is particularly important because the 2027 Australian Open begins in January. Sinner’s medical team now has several months to work on his recovery before he begins his preparation for the new season.

Sinner’s supporters will therefore be hoping that the early shutdown proves to be a sensible long-term decision rather than the beginning of a prolonged injury absence.

The Italian himself sounded determined to return at full strength.

“I will do everything possible to get back 100%,” he said.

That message will matter more to Sinner’s fans than his ranking position. After spending much of 2026 establishing himself as the dominant force in men’s tennis, his immediate objective is simply to get healthy again.

His absence also creates an opportunity for the rest of the tour. Zverev now has a realistic path to the world number one ranking, while Alcaraz and Djokovic will have another chance to close the gap at the top.

But the biggest question remains when Sinner will be ready to compete again.

For now, the answer is clear: not in 2026.

The world number one has decided that protecting his long-term career is more important than chasing more titles this season. After a year that included a fifth Grand Slam title, six trophies and an extraordinary run of victories, Sinner’s season ends earlier than anyone expected.

The tennis world will now wait for his return in 2027.
