Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Left Waiting as Gautam Gambhir Explains Why Sanju Samson Was Picked Ahead of Him

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have arrived in the Afghanistan T20I series with huge momentum, but the teenage batting sensation did not get a single opportunity to take the field. Even after India sealed the series before the final match, the team management continued with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order.

India completed a 3-0 T20I series sweep over Afghanistan on September 17, with Abhishek Sharma producing a stunning record-breaking century in the final game. After the match, head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the obvious question surrounding Sooryavanshi’s absence and made it clear that the youngster will have to wait for his opportunity.

Gambhir’s explanation was less about Sooryavanshi’s current form and more about rewarding players who have already established themselves at international level.

Gambhir: Sooryavanshi will have to wait

Gambhir was direct when asked about Sooryavanshi’s situation. According to the India coach, there is no question about the youngster’s talent, but players who have performed consistently over a longer period will naturally be ahead of someone who has only recently entered the international setup.

Gambhir also promised that when Sooryavanshi gets his opportunity, the youngster will not be judged on the basis of one or two matches. Instead, he indicated that the 15-year-old will receive a longer run.

That message is important for Sooryavanshi, particularly because his recent numbers have already created enormous expectations around him.

The youngster was the standout performer during India’s Zimbabwe T20I tour, scoring 151 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 196.10. He was named Player of the Series and appeared to be building a strong case for another opportunity at the top of India’s batting order.

However, international cricket is not only about current form. India’s management also has to consider established combinations, previous performances and the balance of the playing XI.

Why did India stick with Sanju Samson?

The return of Sanju Samson was the biggest reason Sooryavanshi remained on the bench.

Gambhir pointed towards Samson’s body of work for India and specifically referred to the decision to leave him out during the England series. The coach described that decision as one of the toughest calls of his coaching career.

The reasoning behind bringing Samson back was also linked to India’s successful T20 World Cup combination.

Gambhir’s argument was that a player does not suddenly become a poor cricketer after three or four failures. If a combination has delivered consistently and helped India win a World Cup, the team management can be expected to show some faith in those players.

Samson then strengthened that argument during the Afghanistan series.

The wicketkeeper-batter scored two half-centuries and finished with 117 runs from three matches. His 57 off just 20 balls in the second T20I was particularly important as India chased down Afghanistan’s 159 with plenty of overs remaining.

So, while Sooryavanshi had the momentum of his Zimbabwe performances, Samson had the experience and an immediate return to form.

Sooryavanshi’s wait is not necessarily bad news

For fans eager to see Sooryavanshi in India’s playing XI, sitting out an entire series may feel disappointing. But Gambhir’s comments suggest that the team management still sees a significant future for the youngster.

The key phrase was that Sooryavanshi would get a longer run when his opportunity arrives.

That could be important for a teenager making his way through international cricket. Instead of being brought into the XI for one game simply because a series has already been decided, the management appears to want his eventual opportunity to come when they are prepared to give him a proper stretch of matches.

It also reflects the intense competition at the top of India’s T20 batting order.

Abhishek Sharma has continued to establish himself as an explosive option, while Samson has now produced a productive Afghanistan series. The third T20I only strengthened that competition, with Abhishek smashing a record-breaking 30-ball century as India defeated Afghanistan by 127 runs.

With two aggressive opening options performing well, there was little reason for the management to break up the combination during the series.

What happens next for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

The good news for Sooryavanshi is that his India journey is far from being put on hold.

India’s upcoming schedule provides further opportunities for the teenager. He has been included in India’s T20 squad for the home series against West Indies, which begins in October. India also have a T20I against Japan and their Asian Games campaign ahead.

That means the wait could eventually turn into an opportunity much sooner than it appears.

For now, the biggest challenge for Sooryavanshi is managing expectations. His Zimbabwe performances were spectacular, but international cricket is a much longer journey than one outstanding series.

At just 15, there is also no need for India to rush him.

The most significant part of Gambhir’s message was not simply that Sooryavanshi has to wait. It was the assurance that once his chance comes, he will be given enough opportunities to show what he can do.

That could be exactly what the youngster needs.

India now have a fascinating situation at the top of their T20 batting order: an explosive young prospect waiting for his chance, an established wicketkeeper-batter returning to form and an aggressive left-handed opener capable of producing match-winning innings.
