Jon Rahm gives up reported $100 million in LIV Golf exit deal

Jon Rahm’s departure from LIV Golf has come with a staggering financial sacrifice. The Spanish golfer has reportedly walked away from more than $100 million in potential remaining payments as part of a separation agreement with the Saudi-backed golf league, bringing fresh attention to the uncertain future of LIV Golf.

According to the details outlined in the bankruptcy proceedings, Rahm agreed to give up his monetary claims against LIV Golf in exchange for the return of his name, image and likeness (NIL) rights and confirmation of ownership of his “Rahmbo” trademark. The agreement represents a significant turning point for the former Masters champion, who joined LIV Golf in late 2023 in one of the most expensive moves in professional golf.

However, there is an important distinction between the reported $100 million figure and the amount Rahm formally claimed. ESPN reported that he was believed to be owed more than $100 million under the remainder of his contract. His actual filed claim against LIV Golf was $7,472,527.47.

The difference between those figures has become one of the most closely watched aspects of his departure.

Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf exit and the $100 million question

Rahm’s decision to leave LIV Golf is not simply another high-profile player departure. It raises questions about the financial commitments made to some of the sport’s biggest names and what happens when those agreements collide with an uncertain business future.

When Rahm signed with LIV Golf in late 2023, the move sent shockwaves through professional golf. Golf Digest reported that his contract was worth approximately $350 million, although the full financial terms were not publicly disclosed. Front Office Sports also reported speculation that the deal could have been worth between $300 million and $600 million.

Those figures should be treated as reported estimates rather than independently verified contract values.

Rahm’s reported remaining payments were tied to the terms of his agreement with LIV Golf. ESPN indicated that he was believed to have more than $100 million still outstanding. By accepting the separation agreement, however, he gave up his right to pursue those monetary claims.

That does not necessarily mean Rahm surrendered a confirmed $100 million cash balance. The figure is an estimate of what he may have been entitled to receive under the remaining contract, while the formal bankruptcy claim was considerably smaller.

The distinction matters because the headline figure reflects reported future contractual obligations, not a court-approved payment or a verified amount already owed.

What Rahm gets in return for walking away

The separation agreement outlines what Rahm gives up and what he retains following his departure from the league.

Under the terms described in the bankruptcy filing, Rahm agreed to a complete economic walk-away. He released his monetary claims, including those relating to fees, bonuses, prize money and potential rejection damages.

In return, he regained control of his name, image and likeness rights. These rights are particularly important for a golfer whose commercial value extends well beyond tournament results.

NIL rights allow athletes to control and commercially exploit their names, images and likenesses, subject to applicable agreements and legal restrictions. For a player of Rahm’s stature, that can influence sponsorship arrangements, advertising campaigns, merchandise and other business opportunities.

The agreement also confirms that Rahm’s company owns the “Rahmbo” trademark, a nickname closely associated with the golfer.

There is, however, one notable restriction. Rahm cannot take the Legion XIII team name with him to another golf competition, including the proposed TGL environment. That means his personal brand can move forward independently, but the team identity remains outside the assets he can freely carry into another league.

The agreement is also subject to court approval. Bankruptcy Judge Michael B. Kaplan was scheduled to consider the matter at a November 5 hearing.

Until the relevant approval is secured, the agreement’s legal status remains an important part of the story.

Why LIV Golf’s financial troubles changed everything

Rahm’s departure comes at a difficult time for LIV Golf. The league, launched in 2022 as a rival to the established PGA Tour, attracted several leading players with enormous contracts, guaranteed payments and a team-based competition format.

For years, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund provided the financial backing that allowed LIV Golf to compete aggressively for star players. That support, however, is now coming to an end.

In April 2026, the PIF announced that it would stop funding LIV Golf after the end of the season, citing a change in investment priorities. The league subsequently began looking for alternative investors and exploring a new operating structure.

The funding change has placed greater pressure on LIV Golf to demonstrate that its business model can survive without its principal financial backer. Its efforts to develop LIV 2.0 have become central to that challenge.

Rahm’s lawyer told the court on October 7 that his client would not participate in the league’s proposed next phase because the terms were unacceptable. The subsequent separation agreement provides a formal route for both sides to move forward.

For LIV Golf, the agreement also removes a major financial liability from its bankruptcy proceedings. For Rahm, it ends the contractual relationship and restores control over important aspects of his personal brand.

What happens next for Jon Rahm?

Rahm’s next career move will be closely followed by golf fans. The Spaniard remains one of the most accomplished players of his generation, having won the Masters in 2023 and the US Open in 2021.

His departure from LIV Golf does not automatically guarantee a return to the PGA Tour. Any comeback would depend on the applicable membership rules, eligibility requirements and decisions made by the tour.

The DP World Tour could offer a more immediate competitive route. Golf Digest has reported that Rahm is expected to return to DP World Tour events in the Middle East in November.

His future schedule will be important, particularly as professional golf continues to navigate the divide between LIV Golf and the established tours.

Rahm’s decision also highlights a wider question facing players who joined LIV Golf for lucrative long-term contracts: how much certainty do those agreements provide when the league itself faces financial and structural changes?

In Rahm’s case, the answer comes with a remarkable price tag. He has reportedly surrendered more than $100 million in potential future payments to secure his exit, although the precise calculation behind that estimate has not been made public.

The separation agreement still requires court approval, making the November 5 hearing an important date in the process.

For now, Rahm appears ready to move on, even if doing so means leaving an extraordinary amount of reported money behind.
