Bhuvneshwar Kumar joins India squad for final T20I against West Indies

India have added experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to their squad for the fifth and final T20 International against West Indies, scheduled to be played in Bengaluru on October 17. The move comes after left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh suffered a shoulder injury during the fourth T20I, raising concerns over his availability for the series decider.

With the five-match series level at 2-2, the final game is crucial for both teams. India will be eager to finish the series with a victory, while West Indies will look to build on their fourth-match win and clinch the trophy. Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion gives the Indian team another experienced pace-bowling option at an important stage of the contest.

According to the squad update provided in the report, Bhuvneshwar has been added as cover for Arshdeep. The left-arm pacer’s participation in the final match will depend on his recovery and assessment ahead of the game. His injury does not automatically rule him out, but India’s management will need to prepare for the possibility of playing without one of its leading T20 fast bowlers.

Why has Bhuvneshwar Kumar been added to India’s squad?

Arshdeep Singh injured his left shoulder during India’s fourth T20I against West Indies in Hyderabad. The incident occurred in the final over of India’s innings when a short delivery from West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph struck him on the shoulder.

Arshdeep appeared to be in considerable discomfort and received treatment from the team physiotherapist. However, the pain did not subside sufficiently, forcing him to retire hurt. He had faced four deliveries and scored five runs before leaving the field.

India eventually lost the fourth T20I by 24 runs, allowing West Indies to level the series at 2-2. The result has made the final match even more important, with the series winner to be decided in Bengaluru.

Arshdeep’s injury has created a selection dilemma for India. While the team has young fast bowlers such as Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, Bhuvneshwar brings years of international experience and the ability to bowl effectively with both the new ball and at the death.

His presence also gives the management greater flexibility when deciding the final bowling combination. If Arshdeep is unavailable, Bhuvneshwar could become a strong option for the playing XI.

Arshdeep Singh’s performances in the T20I series

Arshdeep has had a mixed outing against West Indies in the ongoing series. Although he has picked up important wickets, he has also conceded runs at a relatively high rate.

His performances across the first four matches have included figures of 1/34, 0/45, 3/44 and 1/52, according to the match details provided. His best performance came in the third T20I, when he claimed three wickets.

The numbers underline the challenging conditions faced by India’s bowlers. Batting-friendly pitches can make it difficult for fast bowlers to maintain control, particularly when batters attack from the beginning of an innings. Even so, conceding 52 runs in four overs in the fourth match will be an area India may want to address before the series decider.

Arshdeep remains an important part of India’s T20 plans. His left-arm angle, ability to generate movement and experience in pressure situations make him a valuable option. However, the team will not want to take unnecessary risks with his fitness, especially with more international cricket ahead.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s international comeback opportunity

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has not played a T20 International for India since November 2022, when he featured against New Zealand in Napier. The experienced pacer was once a regular member of India’s limited-overs bowling attack, known for his swing bowling, accuracy and ability to deliver in the closing overs.

He has played 87 T20 Internationals for India and taken 90 wickets at an economy rate of 6.96. Those numbers reflect his impact in the shortest international format, particularly during the period when he was one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers.

Over the years, injuries and changes in team selection reduced his opportunities at the international level. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh subsequently established themselves as leading options in India’s T20 pace attack, while other fast bowlers also received opportunities.

However, Bhuvneshwar’s experience remains valuable. He understands how to use swing with the new ball, vary his pace on slower surfaces and execute plans against attacking batters. Those qualities could be particularly useful in a high-pressure series decider.

How the IPL helped Bhuvneshwar return to India’s plans

Bhuvneshwar’s recent Indian Premier League performances have strengthened his case for an international return. Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he has continued to demonstrate his ability to take wickets while maintaining control over his bowling.

His performances in the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons, as outlined in the supplied report, have helped bring him back into the selection conversation. The report credits him with 17 wickets in 14 matches in 2025 and 28 wickets in 16 matches in 2026.

Such consistency is significant for a fast bowler whose strengths depend on accuracy, movement and smart changes of pace rather than speed alone. His ability to bowl in different phases of an innings has made him a useful option for Bengaluru.

Bhuvneshwar had also been selected for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. His addition to the squad for the West Indies decider could therefore provide an earlier opportunity to return to international cricket, depending on the final team selection.

A possible appearance in Bengaluru would carry additional significance, given his recent association with RCB and his familiarity with the conditions. He also made his T20I debut for India against Pakistan in Bengaluru in December 2012, making the venue an important part of his international career.

Updated India squad for the fifth T20I

India’s updated squad for the final T20I against West Indies includes Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Naman Dhir and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Arshdeep’s inclusion in the squad remains subject to his fitness assessment, while Bhuvneshwar has been brought in as cover. The final playing XI will depend on the team’s assessment of the injury, pitch conditions and bowling requirements.

What can Bhuvneshwar bring to the series decider?

Bhuvneshwar’s biggest strength is his ability to move the ball in the air and off the pitch. He can trouble right-handed batters with deliveries moving away from them and use changes of pace to disrupt the rhythm of aggressive hitters.

His experience also gives India another option during the powerplay and the death overs. While he is not a like-for-like replacement for a left-arm bowler such as Arshdeep, he offers a different style of attack that could prove useful against West Indies’ powerful batting line-up.

The final decision will depend on whether India believe Bhuvneshwar is ready to feature immediately and whether Arshdeep has recovered sufficiently to play. If the senior pacer gets the opportunity, he will have a chance to show that his recent domestic T20 performances can translate into international success.

With the series tied at 2-2, the fifth T20I promises to be a closely watched contest. India’s bowling combination could play a decisive role in determining the outcome, and Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion has added another important selection question ahead of the match.
