Joe Carpenter targets England return after impressive Sale Sharks start

Joe Carpenter is determined to turn his impressive start to the Premiership season into a genuine opportunity to return to England’s international set-up. The Sale Sharks full-back has made an immediate impact in the opening rounds and now faces an important test against Harlequins, with England rival George Furbank expected to be part of the contest.

Carpenter has not featured for England since making his international debut against the United States in July 2025. However, his attacking performances for Sale have strengthened his case for another opportunity, and the upcoming meeting with Harlequins gives him a chance to demonstrate what he can offer at the highest level.

The 24-year-old is among the Premiership’s most effective players when it comes to beating defenders. Only Exeter Chiefs winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso has surpassed his tally across the opening two rounds of the campaign, underlining Carpenter’s growing influence in attack.

With England’s next selection period approaching in November, the Sale full-back knows that consistent performances at club level could make the difference.
Full pre-season could prove decisive for Carpenter

One of the biggest factors behind Carpenter’s strong opening has been the opportunity to complete a full pre-season with Sale.

The full-back missed out on England’s summer touring programme, which included demanding travel and international fixtures. While the omission was disappointing, it allowed him to spend 10 uninterrupted weeks preparing for the new campaign, something he had not experienced for three years.

Carpenter believes the additional preparation has helped him improve both physically and mentally. He feels fitter, stronger and better equipped to maintain his performance levels throughout a match.

Those improvements are particularly important for a full-back, a position that requires players to cover significant ground, defend against dangerous counter-attacks and contribute to attacking moves from deep.

England’s coaching staff have previously challenged Carpenter to improve his decision-making when covering the backfield and his ability to repeat high-intensity efforts. His performances so far suggest that the extra conditioning work is beginning to pay off.

Carpenter’s challenge now is to demonstrate that these improvements can be maintained against different opponents and under pressure.

George Furbank battle adds extra motivation

The meeting with Harlequins offers Carpenter an opportunity to measure himself against another player with England ambitions.

Furbank was a leading option at full-back for England before injury disrupted his international involvement. His move from Northampton Saints to Harlequins adds another interesting dimension to Sunday’s encounter.

Carpenter has acknowledged that facing a player competing for similar international opportunities provides additional motivation. However, he has also stressed that Sale’s overall performance must remain the priority.

Harlequins arrive at the fixture after a difficult start to the Premiership campaign, including a heavy defeat against Gloucester. That result will increase the pressure on the visitors to respond, and Carpenter expects them to approach the match with renewed intensity.

For Sale, the objective is to take advantage of home conditions while maintaining the discipline and attacking intent that have characterised their better performances.

Carpenter’s ability to beat defenders could be particularly important if the hosts find opportunities to attack the space behind Harlequins’ defensive line.

His direct running can force defenders to commit, creating openings for Sale’s wingers and midfield runners. The full-back has also explained that creating opportunities for teammates is just as important to him as scoring tries himself.

That balance between individual threat and team contribution could be crucial as he attempts to convince England selectors that his game has developed further.

Sale Sharks looking to build momentum

Sale’s wider ambitions provide another important part of Carpenter’s story.

The club endured a frustrating previous league campaign, finishing seventh after winning only five of their 18 Premiership matches. Their season also included a heavy defeat against Saracens and a Champions Cup quarter-final exit against Leinster.

Those results prompted questions about the direction of the team, but director of rugby Alex Sanderson has continued to reshape the squad and strengthen its leadership.

The arrival of experienced figures, including former England captain Courtney Lawes, has added further quality and experience. Established internationals such as Tom Curry and George Ford also remain important to Sale’s ambitions.

The impact of that experience was evident in Sale’s 21-17 victory away to Saracens on 4 October. Despite spending part of the contest with a numerical disadvantage, the Sharks defended resolutely and produced key attacking moments to secure their first league win of the campaign.

That result provided a timely response after their opening league defeat against Bristol Bears and offered the squad an opportunity to build confidence ahead of the Harlequins fixture.

Carpenter played his part in the victory and will now be looking to deliver another assured display at the CorpAcq Stadium.

The full-back admitted that deciding to sign a new contract with Sale was not straightforward after the disappointment of the previous season. Conversations with the coaching staff about the club’s playing approach and incoming recruits ultimately convinced him that staying was the right decision.

He now has an opportunity to help Sale return to the upper reaches of the Premiership while improving his own international prospects.

England selection remains the ultimate goal

Carpenter has made it clear that returning to England remains one of his major ambitions. He understands, however, that a single impressive performance will not necessarily be enough to earn a recall.

Consistency will be essential, particularly with competition for places in England’s back three remaining strong. Players must offer attacking quality while also demonstrating reliable positioning, sound decision-making and defensive awareness.

Carpenter’s current attacking numbers give him a positive starting point. His ability to beat defenders, carry the ball into space and repeatedly challenge opposition lines makes him an intriguing option for the national selectors.

The next step is to turn those qualities into sustained performances across the season. If he can continue producing strong displays against Premiership opposition, his case for international consideration will become increasingly difficult to ignore.

For now, the focus remains on Harlequins and the opportunity to help Sale secure consecutive league victories.

The contest against Furbank offers an additional personal challenge, but Carpenter knows that the best way to strengthen his England ambitions is to perform consistently for his club.

With the November international window approaching, the coming weeks could prove significant for the Sale full-back.
