David Silva comes out of retirement at 40 to join Hong Kong club Sha Tin
David Silva has made a stunning return to professional football at the age of 40, ending his three-year retirement to join Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin.
The former Manchester City and Spain midfielder stepped away from the game in 2023 after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season training with Real Sociedad. Three years later, the man affectionately known as “El Mago” is ready to put his boots back on.
Silva’s comeback was confirmed by Supreme Sha Tin on Wednesday, with the newly promoted Hong Kong side announcing that the Spanish football legend will join the club on a short-term deal. The move has immediately become one of the most eye-catching stories in Asian football.
“I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong,” Silva said in a video shared on social media.
For a player who spent the majority of his career competing at the highest level in Europe, the decision to return in Hong Kong is an unexpected one. But Silva appears to be motivated by the opportunity to experience a different football culture rather than simply adding another chapter to an already remarkable trophy collection.
From retirement to an unexpected comeback
Silva announced his retirement in July 2023 after 19 years as a professional footballer. At the time, the decision came after a devastating knee injury suffered during training at Real Sociedad.
The Spaniard had already achieved almost everything possible during his career. He began his senior career at Valencia before establishing himself as one of the most influential midfielders of his generation at Manchester City.
His move to City in 2010 proved to be a defining moment. Silva became a central figure in the club’s transformation into one of England’s dominant teams.
Over 10 seasons at the Etihad Stadium, he made 436 appearances and scored 77 goals. He also won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups.
According to Premier League records, Silva made 309 appearances in the competition for Manchester City, scoring 60 goals and providing 93 assists. His 93 Premier League assists remain one of the strongest indicators of the creative influence he had on English football.
His achievements at City eventually earned him a permanent place in the club’s history. A statue of Silva stands outside the Etihad Stadium alongside those of fellow City greats Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero.
A key figure in Spain’s golden generation
Silva’s influence was not limited to club football.
He was an important member of the Spain side that dominated international football during one of the greatest eras in the country’s history. He won the European Championship in 2008, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and another European Championship in 2012.
Silva finished his international career with 125 appearances and 35 goals for Spain.
His technical ability, close control, vision and ability to find space between the lines made him perfectly suited to Spain’s possession-heavy style. He was also capable of producing decisive moments in front of goal, making him far more than just a creative midfielder.
Real Sociedad also paid tribute to Silva when he retired in 2023, describing him as one of the greatest talents in the history of the sport.
Why Sha Tin have signed David Silva
Supreme Sha Tin were promoted to the Hong Kong Premier League last season and currently sit in the lower half of the table. The club are eighth after four matches in the 11-team competition, according to the latest reports.
The arrival of Silva is therefore about much more than adding another experienced midfielder to the squad.
His name brings global attention to the club and to Hong Kong football. For Sha Tin, signing a World Cup winner and four-time Premier League champion represents a major statement of ambition.
The club said Silva will first settle in, join squad training and work towards reaching peak match fitness before making his debut. That means supporters may have to wait before seeing the 40-year-old on the pitch.
Sha Tin’s next scheduled league fixture is against Hong Kong Football Club on October 18, although Silva’s availability for that match remains dependent on his arrival, fitness and preparation.
Reports from Hong Kong indicate that the club will assess Silva’s physical condition before deciding exactly when he will play his first match. That cautious approach is understandable given that the midfielder has not played competitive football since his retirement in 2023.
A different ending to an extraordinary career
Silva’s return is particularly fascinating because his original retirement appeared to be final.
When he announced his decision in 2023, he had already left behind a career that most footballers could only dream of. He had won the World Cup, two European Championships, four Premier League titles and numerous domestic trophies.
He had also become a symbol of Manchester City’s rise.
His ability to receive the ball under pressure, turn away from defenders and create chances in tight spaces made him one of the Premier League’s most admired attacking midfielders. He was rarely the loudest player on the pitch, but his influence was impossible to miss.
Now, at 40, the challenge is completely different.
Silva does not need to prove that he belongs among football’s greats. Instead, his comeback is about discovering whether his body can once again handle competitive football and enjoying the game on his own terms.
The Hong Kong Premier League will provide a very different environment from the Premier League, La Liga or international football. But that could be exactly what makes this chapter so interesting.
There is also a sense of nostalgia attached to the move. Fans who watched Silva dominate midfield for Manchester City more than a decade ago will now have the opportunity to see him playing again, albeit thousands of miles away from the Etihad.
For Sha Tin, meanwhile, the signing could become one of the biggest moments in the club’s history.
Silva has already said he is looking forward to experiencing Hong Kong’s culture, people, food and football. If he can regain enough fitness to make a meaningful contribution on the pitch, the move could become much more than a publicity stunt.
For now, the football world will simply wait to see the little magician work his magic again.
David Silva retired as a legend. Three years later, at 40, he has decided that his football story still has another chapter to write.
