Aaryavir Sehwag named Delhi U19 captain for Vinoo Mankad Trophy
Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former India opener Virender Sehwag, has been handed a major responsibility at the start of an important phase in his young cricket career. The 18-year-old has been appointed captain of Delhi’s Under-19 team for the 2026-27 Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
The Delhi & District Cricket Association announced a 16-member squad, with Aaryavir named captain and Arnav Bugga appointed vice-captain. The tournament begins in Visakhapatnam on October 8, giving Aaryavir his first major opportunity to lead a representative Delhi side.
For Aaryavir, the timing is particularly interesting. His appointment comes just weeks after he made his India Under-19 debut against Australia. He now moves from being a promising young opener under the spotlight to becoming the player responsible for leading an entire Delhi age-group side.
Aaryavir Sehwag gets his first major captaincy
The biggest talking point is not simply the Sehwag surname but the leadership responsibility attached to it.
Aaryavir has already experienced the pressure that comes with being the son of one of India’s most recognisable opening batters. Virender Sehwag was known for attacking bowling from the first ball and became one of India’s most successful Test and ODI openers.
However, Aaryavir has repeatedly indicated that he wants to establish himself through his own performances rather than simply being compared with his father.
That makes the Delhi captaincy an important step. Leading an Under-19 team is different from scoring runs as an opener. Aaryavir will have to manage situations, communicate with teammates, understand match conditions and make decisions under pressure.
It will also be interesting to see how he handles the additional responsibility while continuing to develop his batting.
Delhi’s first Vinoo Mankad Trophy match is scheduled against Gujarat Under-19 on October 8 in Visakhapatnam. Delhi are in Elite Group E, with further matches scheduled during the tournament.
109 runs in first India U19 series
Aaryavir’s promotion to captain comes after his recent India Under-19 assignment against Australia.
He made his Youth ODI debut in the opening game in Rajkot, scoring 28 from 26 balls. India won that rain-affected match by seven runs after posting 182/6 in 20 overs.
The opener then produced his best score of the three-match series with 47 runs in the second game. He was eventually run out after facing 48 balls and hitting nine fours as India posted 341/7.
He followed that with 34 in the third match, finishing the series with 109 runs from three innings.
The numbers may not look spectacular at first glance, but the series was valuable experience for a player making his first appearance at international youth level. More importantly, Aaryavir had the opportunity to face an Australian attack and understand what is required at a higher level of age-group cricket.
He has also admitted that converting starts into big scores remains an area he wants to improve. That could be one of the biggest challenges for him during the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
The 297 that put Aaryavir in the spotlight
Long before his India U19 debut and Delhi captaincy, Aaryavir had already produced an innings that made the cricket world sit up.
In the 2024 Cooch Behar Trophy, he scored a remarkable 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya. He faced 309 deliveries, hit 51 fours and three sixes, and came within just three runs of a triple century. Delhi eventually declared on 623/5.
The innings naturally created comparisons with his father.
Virender Sehwag famously scored 319 against South Africa in Chennai in 2008, which remains his highest Test score. After Aaryavir fell for 297, Sehwag joked that his son had “missed a Ferrari by 23 runs” because he had previously promised a Ferrari if one of his sons broke his 319-run record.
That innings remains one of the strongest pieces of evidence behind the expectations surrounding Aaryavir. It was not merely a cameo or a flashy age-group performance. It was a marathon innings that demonstrated concentration, stroke-making ability and the capacity to bat for a long period.
From Delhi cricket to the Premier League
Aaryavir has also begun getting exposure beyond Under-19 cricket.
He featured for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League, giving him an opportunity to play alongside and against more experienced domestic cricketers. Available match records show him as part of the West Delhi Lions squad during the tournament.
That experience is useful because young players often need exposure to different formats and different levels of competition before making the jump towards senior domestic cricket.
The next challenge is therefore not just about scoring runs. Aaryavir needs to develop consistency.
A 297 will always attract headlines. A good India U19 debut will attract attention. Being named Delhi captain will attract even more. But the real test for any young cricketer is whether those individual moments can be turned into a sustained run of performances.
Delhi U19 squad for Vinoo Mankad Trophy
Delhi have selected a 16-member squad for the tournament.
Aaryavir Sehwag will lead the side, with Arnav Bugga as vice-captain. The squad also includes Tanmay Chaudhary, Dhanya Nakra, Uday Chawla, Garv Kumar, Abhiraj Gagan Singh, Tarun Singh, Aaryan Sharma, Ojasdeep Singh, Kirit Kaushik, Varun Vanjani, Rudra Dev Yadav, Pradyuman Sanan, Parth Raj and Shantanu Yadav.
The presence of players who have played alongside Aaryavir previously could help him settle into the leadership role. At the same time, captaining a team brings a completely different set of expectations.
The Vinoo Mankad Trophy is particularly important in India’s domestic pathway because it provides young cricketers with a platform to perform in competitive 50-over cricket. Strong performances can help players
