Virat Kohli golden duck: 2481 days later, the unwanted ODI record returns

Virat Kohli is not a batter fans are accustomed to seeing walk back after facing just one ball. Yet that was exactly the scene at New Chandigarh on Saturday, October 3, when the former India captain was bowled by Jayden Seales for a golden duck in the third ODI against West Indies.

Kohli came in at No. 3 after captain Shubman Gill had fallen early. There was barely enough time for the crowd to settle before Seales produced the delivery that stunned the stadium. The ball beat Kohli and crashed into the middle stump, ending his innings at 0 off 1.

For Kohli, this was his fourth golden duck in ODI cricket. More remarkably, it was his first first-ball dismissal in the format since December 18, 2019, when West Indies’ Kieron Pollard dismissed him in Visakhapatnam.

That means 2481 days passed between Kohli’s previous ODI golden duck and this one. It is an extraordinary gap considering how many ODI innings the Indian star has played during that period.

Kohli’s fourth ODI golden duck

The latest dismissal is only the fourth time Kohli has been dismissed from the first ball he faced in an ODI.

His four golden ducks have come against three different opposition sides, with West Indies responsible for three of them.

The number is surprisingly small for a batter who has spent almost two decades playing international cricket. Kohli’s reputation has been built on giving himself time at the crease, particularly in ODI cricket, where his ability to build an innings and control a chase has become one of his biggest strengths.

The latest dismissal therefore stands out more because it is so unusual.

There was also an interesting contrast with Kohli’s previous outing in the series. In the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram, he produced a spectacular unbeaten 139 from 88 balls and became only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs.

Just one match later, he was back in the dressing room without scoring.

Kohli now has 19 ODI ducks

While the golden duck was Kohli’s fourth in the format, the dismissal was his 19th overall ODI duck.

That moves him just one behind Sachin Tendulkar on India’s all-time list for most ODI ducks.

Tendulkar finished his legendary ODI career with 20 ducks in 463 matches. Kohli now has 19 ducks in 317 ODIs, while former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath also finished with 19.

The list needs some context because several players near the top were genuine lower-order batters or bowlers. Even so, Kohli’s presence near the top is notable because he has spent most of his career batting in the top order.

Kohli’s numbers become even more interesting when the ducks are viewed alongside his run-scoring record. He has already crossed 15,000 ODI runs and currently has 55 ODI centuries, according to the latest career statistics.

In other words, the occasional zero is a tiny part of a much larger record.

Sanath Jayasuriya still owns the unwanted world record

Kohli is close to Tendulkar on India’s list, but neither is close to the global ODI record.

That belongs to Sri Lanka legend Sanath Jayasuriya, who finished his ODI career with 34 ducks from 445 matches.

Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi is second on the list with 30, while Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene and Pakistan’s Wasim Akram both finished with 28.

These numbers also underline an important point: a duck does not automatically tell the story of a player’s quality. Some of the greatest ODI players in history appear on this list simply because they played hundreds of matches and thousands of deliveries.

India’s early collapse opened the door for the middle order

Kohli’s golden duck became even more significant because India were in trouble almost immediately.

Shubman Gill also departed cheaply, leaving India in a difficult position at the start of the innings. But instead of collapsing, India’s experienced middle order recovered impressively.

Rohit Sharma scored 92, while KL Rahul produced an unbeaten 129. Ruturaj Gaikwad also contributed strongly as India reached 351/7 from their 50 overs.

For Rahul, it was an important innings because he remained there until the end and helped India post a total that initially looked extremely competitive.

But West Indies had other plans.

Captain Shai Hope played one of the finest ODI innings of his career, smashing an unbeaten 162 from 143 balls. West Indies reached 352/5 in only 48.2 overs, completing their highest successful ODI run chase and winning by five wickets.

India had already secured the series after winning the first two matches, so West Indies’ victory was ultimately a consolation win. Still, the manner of the chase made it a memorable finish to the ODI leg of the tour.

One golden duck does not change Kohli’s ODI story

The timing of Kohli’s dismissal makes the statistic more eye-catching, but it should not be confused with a major form crisis.

Only a few days earlier, Kohli had smashed 139* against the same opposition and crossed the 15,000-run milestone. He remains one of the most prolific ODI batters in cricket history, and the latest zero is simply another unusual entry in an otherwise extraordinary career.

The more interesting question is whether Kohli can respond quickly when India return to ODI cricket.

For now, the headline belongs to Jayden Seales. His name has joined Darren Sammy, Tim Bresnan and Kieron Pollard as the bowlers who have dismissed Kohli for a golden duck in ODIs.

And after waiting 2481 days for another first-ball failure, Kohli’s fourth golden duck has suddenly become one of the most talked-about statistics from India’s latest ODI.

India may have lost the final match, but they won the series 2-1. West Indies leave the ODI leg with a famous record chase, while Indian cricket moves on to its next challenge.
