Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Portugal camp after Jorge Jesus denies rift

Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team camp ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark, creating fresh uncertainty around his immediate international future.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain announced his departure on Instagram after head coach Jorge Jesus publicly denied that there had been a serious incident between the pair. Ronaldo said he had spoken with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before deciding to leave the camp and added that he would explain the reasons behind his decision “in time.”

The development comes only days after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo. The decision attracted considerable attention, particularly because Ronaldo had started Portugal’s opening Nations League fixture against Wales.

Why did Cristiano Ronaldo leave Portugal camp?

The immediate background to Ronaldo’s departure is his omission from Portugal’s starting lineup against Norway.

Ronaldo started the Nations League campaign against Wales on September 24, but was substituted in the 67th minute of Portugal’s 1-0 victory. He was then an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Norway four days later.

Gonçalo Ramos scored Portugal’s winning goal in Oslo, while João Félix also found the net. Ronaldo did not enter the match despite warming up, and he subsequently did not join his teammates for the traditional interaction with the travelling supporters after the final whistle.

That sequence led to reports that Ronaldo was unhappy with Jesus and that tension had developed inside the Portugal camp.

Jesus, however, insisted there had been no major confrontation.

The Portugal manager explained that Ronaldo had been told before the Norway match that he would not start but could potentially come on later. Jesus said he ultimately decided against making the substitution because the circumstances of the match did not require it.

He also rejected reports that Ronaldo had refused to train.

According to the Portugal camp, Ronaldo had been doing individual gym work focused on mobility and strengthening rather than participating in the team’s full training session. The Portuguese Football Federation said the veteran forward was not injured.

Ronaldo announces his decision

Despite the assurances from Jesus, Ronaldo later confirmed that he had left the national team camp.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Ronaldo said that following the press conference and a conversation with the Portuguese Football Federation president, he had decided to leave.

He also indicated that he would eventually explain what had happened.

The statement has naturally generated further questions because Ronaldo had only recently made clear that he intended to continue playing for Portugal.

Before the start of this international break, Ronaldo revealed that he had considered retiring from international football after the World Cup. Instead, he decided to continue his Portugal career while pursuing the extraordinary milestone of 1,000 senior career goals.

At that stage, he said he would leave when he felt he was no longer contributing to the team. He also stressed that he remained committed to Portugal.

That makes his latest decision particularly significant.

What did Jorge Jesus say about Ronaldo?

Jorge Jesus attempted to play down the situation before Portugal’s next Nations League fixture.

The coach acknowledged that Ronaldo was disappointed after spending a long period warming up without being introduced against Norway. However, Jesus presented the situation as a normal consequence of a manager’s match-day decision rather than evidence of a major breakdown.

Jesus had also previously defended Ronaldo strongly when the veteran forward returned to the national team setup.

The two men already know each other from their time at Al-Nassr, making the current situation even more interesting for Portuguese football observers.

Jesus was appointed Portugal manager after Roberto Martínez’s departure following the 2026 World Cup. His first international campaign in charge has therefore quickly developed an unexpected storyline surrounding the country’s most famous player.

Portugal will face Denmark without Ronaldo

Ronaldo’s departure means he will not be available for Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark on October 1.

Portugal currently sit top of their Nations League group after winning both of their opening matches. They defeated Wales 1-0 before beating Norway 2-1 in Oslo, giving them six points from two games.

Denmark and Norway are both on three points, while Wales are yet to pick up a point.

Portugal are scheduled to face Norway again on October 4, meaning Ronaldo’s absence could extend beyond the Denmark fixture depending on how the situation develops.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that the team’s preparations would continue with the remaining members of the squad and said the delegation remained focused on its upcoming fixtures.

Ronaldo’s international future now under the spotlight

The biggest question is not simply why Ronaldo left the camp, but what the incident means for his future with Portugal.

There is currently no official indication that Ronaldo has retired from international football. In fact, his comments earlier this month suggested the opposite. He had committed to continuing with Portugal and was targeting the 1,000-goal milestone.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and the leading scorer in men’s international football. His international career has already stretched across more than two decades, and he continues to occupy an extraordinary place in Portuguese football.

At the same time, Portugal now have a deeper attacking pool, with players such as Gonçalo Ramos and João Félix competing for opportunities.

Ramos’ winner against Norway also gives Jesus another selection option at centre-forward. The manager had indicated that Ramos would again be preferred to Ronaldo against Denmark before Ronaldo’s departure.

For now, however, the reasons behind Ronaldo’s decision remain his own.

His statement suggests that he intends to explain the situation at a later stage, but until then, reports about the relationship between the Portugal captain and Jesus should be treated carefully. The coach has denied a major incident, while Ronaldo has confirmed that he chose to leave following discussions with the federation president.

What happens next could become one of the most closely followed stories surrounding Portugal during this Nations League campaign.

For football fans, the immediate focus will now turn to Denmark vs Portugal and how Jesus sets up his side without Ronaldo.
