England are back at the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings. Harry Brook’s side completed a dominant 3-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka on Saturday, September 19, beating them by eight wickets at Old Trafford in Manchester. The victory was enough to take England past India and reclaim the No.1 position in the latest T20I team rankings.
England did not just win the series; they finished it in ruthless fashion. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 124 in the third T20I, and England needed only 9.4 overs to chase down the target. Jos Buttler produced another explosive innings, smashing an unbeaten 62 from 32 balls, while Harry Brook added 33 from 21 balls as England wrapped up the game with 62 deliveries still remaining.
The result also extended England’s winning run against Sri Lanka in T20Is to 15 consecutive matches.
England Move Above India in ICC T20I Rankings
The latest ICC T20I rankings have England at the top with a rating of 269, with India also showing a rounded rating of 269. England’s exact rating, however, is fractionally higher, which puts them ahead of the reigning T20 World Cup champions. Australia are third with a rating of 260.
That makes the latest rankings particularly interesting because England and India have been trading places at the top throughout 2026.
England previously moved into contention for the No.1 spot after their remarkable 4-0 T20I series victory over India in July. India subsequently returned to the summit after strong results against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. England have now taken it back after their perfect home T20I series against Sri Lanka.
The change shows just how tight the battle has become at the top of the T20I rankings. Even when two teams have the same rounded rating, the exact rating points and results can determine who occupies the No.1 position.
For India, the change is not a major setback in itself, but it does underline how quickly the rankings can change in the shortest format.
Harry Brook’s England Keep Finding Another Gear
Much of England’s recent success has come under Harry Brook, who has quickly established himself as a successful T20I captain.
According to the latest figures, Brook has led England to 23 wins in 26 completed T20Is. His leadership has coincided with a period of impressive consistency in the shortest format, and the Sri Lanka series added another clean sweep to that record.
Brook was also named Player of the Series against Sri Lanka after producing a sensational batting display across the three matches.
His most memorable performance came in the opening T20I, when he smashed an unbeaten 114 from just 49 balls. That innings immediately put England in control of the series and showed exactly why the team has been willing to give Brook responsibility at the top level.
The England captain finished the series with 170 runs at a strike rate of more than 200, including his century in the opening match.
There is also an interesting tactical development in Brook’s batting. His aggressive approach at No.3 has allowed England to keep attacking even after the powerplay, while the presence of experienced players around him gives the captain plenty of freedom.
Jos Buttler Looks Back at His Explosive Best
While Brook collected the Player of the Series award, Jos Buttler was another major reason behind England’s dominance.
The former England white-ball captain looked much closer to his destructive best during the series. Buttler finished the three-match contest with 172 runs at a strike rate of more than 186.
His biggest contribution came in the final match.
Chasing 125, England lost two wickets but never allowed Sri Lanka to build any pressure. Buttler took control of the chase and smashed 62 not out from 32 deliveries. His innings contained a combination of clean hitting and calculated aggression, allowing England to finish the match inside ten overs.
The third T20I also added another major milestone to Buttler’s already remarkable T20 career. He became the first player to reach 15,000 runs in men’s T20 cricket, moving beyond West Indies great Kieron Pollard’s previous mark.
For England, having Buttler producing this kind of power alongside Brook makes the top order particularly dangerous.
England’s Bowlers Set Up the Easy Chase
The eight-wicket victory was built by the bowlers before Buttler and Brook finished the job.
Sri Lanka started reasonably but lost wickets regularly in the second half of their innings. Pathum Nissanka made 36 while Kamindu Mendis scored 35, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to stay at the crease.
England’s attack shared the workload. Sonny Baker, Jofra Archer and Will Jacks took two wickets each as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 124 in 18.5 overs.
The final six Sri Lankan wickets fell for only 17 runs, turning what could have been a competitive total into a straightforward chase.
England’s fielding and bowling also kept the pressure on throughout the series. Sri Lanka were unable to produce the sustained partnerships needed to challenge a strong England batting lineup.
Sri Lanka’s T20 Struggles Continue
For Sri Lanka, the 3-0 defeat will raise several questions ahead of their next assignments.
They began the series with a heavy 119-run defeat in Southampton before losing the second match by six wickets. The final game followed the same pattern, with England finishing the chase almost without breaking a sweat.
Sri Lanka’s batting was particularly inconsistent. Their inability to convert starts into substantial partnerships repeatedly left the lower order with too much work to do.
The team also struggled to contain England’s aggressive batting approach. Across the series, England repeatedly attacked the bowling rather than allowing Sri Lanka to settle into comfortable spells.
Sri Lanka have now slipped to ninth in the updated T20I rankings, while Pakistan remain sixth.
What This Means for England
The No.1 ranking is another reward for England’s impressive T20I run, but the bigger picture will be just as important.
England have now demonstrated that they can dominate with both bat and ball, while Brook’s leadership continues to develop. Buttler’s return to form gives the side another experienced match-winner, and the emergence of players such as Sonny Baker adds further depth to the squad.
The challenge now is maintaining that level against stronger opposition.
England’s next assignment against Sri Lanka moves into the ODI format, with the three-match series beginning on September 22. The squad includes Brook, Buttler, Joe Root, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and several other familiar names.
For India, meanwhile, the rankings battle is far from over. The gap between the top two sides is extremely small, meaning another strong series could quickly change the order again.
One thing is clear: England are not simply chasing the No.1 ranking anymore. Under Brook, they are building a T20 side capable of playing fast, fearless and aggressive cricket from the first ball.
And with Buttler rediscovering his power and Brook leading from the front, England’s return to the top of the ICC T20I rankings has arrived with plenty of noise.
