Jasprit Bumrah has added another remarkable record to his growing list of achievements. The Indian fast bowler became the leading maiden-over bowler in T20 internationals among full-member nations after delivering his 13th maiden over against Afghanistan in the second T20I in Delhi.
There are plenty of ways to dominate a T20 match. A bowler can pick up wickets, bowl at a frightening pace or simply make life miserable for the batters. Jasprit Bumrah chose the last option on Tuesday.
Playing at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Bumrah opened the bowling for India against Afghanistan and immediately showed why he remains one of the most difficult bowlers to face in world cricket. His first over was completely scoreless, with Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran unable to get a run off the Indian speedster.
That six-ball over took Bumrah’s career tally of T20I maiden overs to 13, moving him ahead of Zimbabwe’s Richard Ngarava, who had 12.
It was a particularly impressive achievement because maiden overs are becoming increasingly rare in T20 cricket. With batters constantly looking to attack from the first ball, giving away zero runs across an entire over requires exceptional accuracy, variation and composure.
Bumrah’s First Over Was a Masterclass
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bowl first in the second match of the three-game series. Bumrah was handed the new ball, and the decision immediately paid off in terms of pressure.
Zadran, Afghanistan’s captain and one of their most important batters, found it extremely difficult to get Bumrah away. The Indian pacer kept hitting the right areas and offered very little room for the opener to work with.
Six deliveries later, the scoreboard had not moved.
For most bowlers, a maiden over is a good result. For Bumrah, it has become something of a trademark.
The timing of this record is also interesting. Bumrah had only recently returned to India’s T20I setup, having been included in the squad for the three-match Afghanistan series after missing some international cricket because of injury concerns. The ICC had confirmed his inclusion in the squad subject to fitness clearance before the series began.
And he wasted little time reminding everyone of his value.
13 Maiden Overs: Bumrah Moves to the Top
Bumrah’s latest maiden moved him past Richard Ngarava at the top of the full-member T20I list.
The leading names now include some of the most respected new-ball bowlers of the modern era.

The presence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the top three makes the statistic even more impressive from an Indian perspective. Bhuvneshwar built his reputation around swing, accuracy and control during the powerplay and finished with 10 T20I maidens.
Bumrah has now gone one better than his former India teammate and has established himself at the top.
The important qualification is that this comparison is being made among full-member nations. Records across all T20 internationals can include associate nations, whose bowlers have also produced unusually high maiden-over numbers.
Why a Maiden Over Is So Difficult in T20 Cricket
A maiden over in Test cricket is impressive, but the challenge is completely different in T20 cricket.
There are only 120 balls available to a batting team. Every over represents 5% of the innings’ total deliveries. A bowler who sends down six consecutive balls without conceding a run effectively removes an entire over’s worth of scoring opportunity.
That is why Bumrah’s achievement deserves attention.
Modern T20 batters are encouraged to attack. Powerplay field restrictions create opportunities to score boundaries, while batters frequently use unconventional shots to disrupt a bowler’s length.
Bumrah’s ability to prevent that is what separates him.
His accuracy allows him to attack the stumps without constantly offering scoring opportunities. His pace makes it difficult for batters to manufacture shots, while his slower balls, yorkers and subtle changes of length give him several ways to stay ahead of the batter.
In short, he does not need to rely only on wickets to influence a match.
Sometimes, simply refusing to give away runs is enough.
Bumrah’s Record Comes During India’s Afghanistan Series
The record was created during India’s three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, which is being played entirely in Delhi. The opening match took place on September 13, followed by the second game on September 15 and the final match on September 17.
India entered the second match with a 1-0 advantage after winning the opening T20I by seven wickets.
In that first match, Bumrah also made an immediate impact after Afghanistan were asked to bat. He dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck in the opening over as India reduced Afghanistan to 41/4 during the powerplay. India eventually won with 38 balls remaining.
So when Bumrah walked out with the new ball again in the second match, Afghanistan already knew exactly what they were up against.
The result was another nightmare start for the Afghan batters.
Test and ODI Cricket Have Their Own Maiden Kings
Bumrah may now sit at the top of the T20I list among full-member teams, but the other two major international formats have their own legendary record holders.
In Test cricket, Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record with an extraordinary 1,794 maiden overs. The number reflects the enormous workload of a spinner who played 133 Tests and became the highest wicket-taker in Test history with 800 wickets.
In ODI cricket, the record belongs to South African great Shaun Pollock.
Pollock bowled 313 maiden overs during his ODI career, finishing well clear of the other leading bowlers in the format. Glenn McGrath and Chaminda Vaas are next on the historical list with 279 each.
So the three formats have three different legends at the top:

- T20I: Jasprit Bumrah – 13 among full-member teams
The numbers are obviously not directly comparable because the formats are very different. Test matches can last five days, ODIs contain 50 overs per innings, while T20Is give bowlers only four overs each.
That makes Bumrah’s 13 T20I maidens all the more eye-catching.
Another Chapter in Bumrah’s Record-Breaking Career
Jasprit Bumrah has already built a reputation for producing numbers that look almost impossible for a modern fast bowler.
He has been one of India’s most reliable performers across formats, and his ability to bowl with the new ball, return at the death and execute yorkers under pressure has made him a key part of India’s bowling attack.
Now he has another record to his name.
A maiden over may not create the same excitement as a five-wicket haul or a spectacular catch, but in T20 cricket, it can change the entire momentum of an innings.
Bumrah’s latest record is proof of that.
One over. Six balls. Zero runs.
And now 13 T20I maidens — the most by a bowler from a full-member nation.
With another T20I still to come in the Afghanistan series, Bumrah will have an opportunity to extend the record even further.
