Dana White Netflix documentary reportedly set for 2027 release as UFC boss expands his empire

Dana White UFC CEO featured in the upcoming Netflix documentary reportedly directed by Gotham Chopra and targeting a 2027 release.

Netflix is reportedly preparing an untitled documentary on UFC CEO Dana White, with the highly anticipated project targeting a release in the first quarter of 2027. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gotham Chopra, the Dana White Netflix documentary is expected to explore the remarkable journey of the man who helped transform the Ultimate Fighting Championship from a struggling fight promotion into a multibillion-dollar global sports business.

The reported project will offer viewers a closer look at White’s professional journey, his involvement in the UFC’s historic ownership changes and his growing influence across combat sports. It could also examine some of the biggest developments in his career, including the UFC’s expansion, its billion-dollar business deals and his latest venture into professional boxing.

According to reports, the documentary was initially planned as a film about Las Vegas before evolving into a project centred on White. Netflix reportedly approved the production while competing for the UFC’s American media rights. Although Paramount eventually won that battle, the streaming giant decided to continue with the documentary.

The film does not yet have an official title or confirmed premiere date.

Gotham Chopra to direct Dana White UFC documentary

The involvement of Gotham Chopra makes the project particularly interesting for sports documentary fans. The filmmaker has considerable experience telling the stories of some of the biggest personalities in professional sports.

Chopra previously directed Man in the Arena: Tom Brady, which followed the legendary NFL quarterback’s career and his experiences during his Super Bowl journeys. He has also worked on projects involving LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Simone Biles.

He is a co-founder of Religion of Sports, a production company established alongside Tom Brady and Michael Strahan.

His experience in sports storytelling could bring a different perspective to the Dana White UFC documentary, especially when examining the business decisions, personal relationships and difficult moments behind the promotion’s growth.

The project reportedly received approval from former Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria. However, she left the company in October 2026, with Peter Rice taking over the position.

Despite the management change and Netflix missing out on the UFC broadcasting deal, production on the documentary has reportedly continued.

Dana White’s $2 million UFC deal changed everything

One of the most important chapters expected to feature in the documentary is the historic Dana White $2 million UFC deal.

In 2001, White played a crucial role in convincing his childhood friends Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta to purchase the struggling UFC promotion for approximately $2 million.

White was subsequently appointed president and became the public face of the organisation. Together with the Fertitta brothers, he helped rebuild the promotion and improve its position in the sporting world.

At the time, mixed martial arts was still struggling for mainstream recognition. The UFC faced regulatory difficulties, criticism over the nature of the sport and challenges in attracting major television partnerships.

However, the organisation gradually changed its commercial approach, expanded internationally and developed a much larger audience.

The results became clear in 2016 when an ownership group led by Endeavor acquired the UFC in a deal valued at approximately $4 billion.

That sale represented an extraordinary transformation from its original $2 million purchase price just 15 years earlier.

White remained president after the acquisition and later became CEO, continuing to oversee the promotion’s commercial and sporting development.

His journey from boxing instructor to one of the most powerful executives in combat sports is likely to be a central attraction of the Netflix production.

Netflix loses UFC rights but continues Dana White project

The story behind the documentary is also connected to Netflix’s unsuccessful attempt to secure UFC broadcasting rights.

The streaming platform reportedly greenlit the project while negotiating with the UFC for its next American media rights agreement. Netflix wanted to strengthen its sports portfolio, and a documentary featuring White could have complemented a potential broadcasting partnership.

However, Paramount eventually secured the UFC’s exclusive US media rights through a seven-year agreement reportedly worth $7.7 billion.

The partnership began in 2026, moving the UFC’s American broadcasting arrangements to Paramount+ and selected events to CBS.

Interestingly, losing the live broadcasting rights did not end Netflix’s interest in White.

The decision to continue the documentary suggests the streaming platform still sees considerable entertainment value in the UFC boss and the business story behind his success.

The reported Dana White Netflix documentary release date window of January to March 2027 also places the project among the streaming platform’s upcoming sports-focused productions.

UFC Freedom 250 and Zuffa Boxing could feature

White’s recent business activities could provide another important angle for the documentary.

The historic UFC Freedom 250 event, staged on the White House South Lawn, represents one of the most unusual moments in the promotion’s history. The event demonstrated how far the UFC has travelled from its early days to becoming a major international entertainment property.

Another potential subject is Dana White Zuffa Boxing, his venture with Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh.

The project reflects White’s growing ambitions beyond mixed martial arts and his interest in building another major combat sports promotion.

These developments could help the film explore how White continues to expand his media and sporting influence rather than simply focusing on the UFC’s early history.

There are also questions about how openly the documentary will address controversies surrounding White’s career, his outspoken personality and his high-profile public disagreements.

It remains unclear how much access Chopra received, whether White participated in interviews or how deeply the film will examine the less comfortable chapters of his professional life.

For now, neither Netflix nor White has officially confirmed the documentary’s title or exact premiere date.

If the reported timeline remains unchanged, 2027 could bring one of the most interesting behind-the-scenes looks at the UFC’s rise and the executive who helped shape its modern identity.
