Mustafizur Rahman BBL debut confirmed as Melbourne Renegades sign Bangladesh star

Mustafizur Rahman joins Melbourne Renegades for his maiden Big Bash League debut in BBL 2026-27.

Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman is finally set to make his long-awaited Mustafizur Rahman BBL debut after signing with Melbourne Renegades for the Big Bash League 2026-27 season. The franchise has brought in the experienced left-arm pacer as a replacement for injured Australian fast bowler Jason Behrendorff, strengthening its bowling attack ahead of the new campaign.

The 31-year-old has established himself as one of the most effective T20 bowlers in international and franchise cricket. Despite playing in several major T20 competitions around the world, he has never featured in Australia’s premier domestic T20 tournament. His arrival at Melbourne Renegades will therefore mark an important milestone in his professional career.

Mustafizur has played 331 T20 matches, collecting an impressive 423 wickets at a strike rate of 16.9. His experience, ability to bowl accurate cutters and variations at crucial moments make him an exciting addition to the Renegades squad.

The signing also comes at an important time for Melbourne, with Jason Behrendorff ruled out of BBL 2026-27 after undergoing shoulder surgery. The Australian left-arm pacer will miss the entire season, forcing the franchise to search for an experienced replacement.

The Renegades eventually secured Mustafizur’s services, bringing in a bowler capable of delivering important breakthroughs during both the powerplay and death overs.

Mustafizur Rahman excited about his Melbourne Renegades opportunity

Speaking after completing his move, Mustafizur expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter in Australian cricket. The Bangladesh international is particularly looking forward to playing at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“I am looking forward to playing in the BBL for the first time with the Melbourne Renegades. It will be special to play at the MCG as my home ground, and I’m excited to join my teammates and bring my experience to the squad,” Mustafizur said in a club statement.

The Mustafizur Rahman MCG debut is expected to attract considerable attention from Bangladesh supporters living in Australia. The Renegades are scheduled to host the Sydney Sixers on January 1 and Melbourne Stars on January 16 at the famous venue.

The club has also introduced a dedicated fan initiative called ‘The Fizz Bay’ for these matches, giving Melbourne’s Bangladeshi cricket community an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of one of its country’s biggest cricket stars.

However, Mustafizur will miss Melbourne Renegades’ opening fixture against Perth Scorchers in Chennai because of his existing commitments with Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. He is expected to join the Renegades after completing those commitments.

Luke Ronchi explains why Mustafizur is the right replacement

Melbourne Renegades head coach Luke Ronchi believes the Bangladesh pacer can make an immediate impact with his experience and wicket-taking ability.

Ronchi highlighted Mustafizur’s effectiveness in different phases of T20 cricket, particularly his ability to control the scoring rate and pick up wickets towards the end of an innings.

“Mustafizur is a proven match-winner in T20 cricket all over the world. His ability to take wickets in both the powerplay and at the death is exactly what we wanted in our attack,” Ronchi said.

The coach also believes the Bangladesh international has the ability to change a match within a single over, making him an exciting prospect for Big Bash League supporters.

The Mustafizur Rahman Melbourne Renegades partnership could prove particularly effective because of his unique bowling style. His slower deliveries and cutters often force batters to adjust their timing, especially when attempting aggressive shots in the final overs.

The franchise already has overseas recruits Jonny Bairstow of England and Michael Bracewell of New Zealand. Mustafizur’s arrival adds another experienced international player to the Melbourne Renegades overseas players group.

Bangladesh players in Big Bash League: Mustafizur creates history

Mustafizur’s signing is also significant for Bangladesh cricket. He is set to become only the third Bangladesh player to feature in the Big Bash League, following Shakib Al Hasan and Rishad Hossain.

Interestingly, Shakib previously represented Melbourne Renegades, while Rishad Hossain is associated with Hobart Hurricanes.

The Bangladesh players in Big Bash League list has remained relatively short over the years, making Mustafizur’s arrival another important moment for the country’s representation in overseas franchise competitions.

The left-arm pacer has enjoyed an impressive career since making his international debut in 2015. He has represented Bangladesh across formats and played in several major franchise tournaments, including the Indian Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League and Pakistan Super League.

His IPL experience includes representing Sunrisers Hyderabad during their 2016 title-winning campaign. He has also collected 121 wickets across nine Bangladesh Premier League campaigns.

The latest Mustafizur Rahman T20 wickets milestone of 423 wickets from 331 matches underlines his consistency and experience in the shortest format.

Meanwhile, the Renegades’ recruitment move comes shortly after Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf signed with Adelaide Strikers, ending his long association with Melbourne Stars. These international signings are adding further excitement to the upcoming Big Bash League campaign.

For Mustafizur, the immediate challenge will be adapting to Australian conditions and delivering consistent performances in a new competition. His variations, experience and ability to handle pressure could make him one of Melbourne’s most important bowling options.
