Australia Test Squad Announced: Marnus Labuschagne retained despite three-year century drought as Pat Cummins leads a 16-member squad for the South Africa Tests
Australia have announced their 16-member Test squad for the 2026 South Africa tour, and the biggest talking point is not the return of a superstar bowler or the inclusion of a young gun. It is the fact that Marnus Labuschagne has survived another selection scare.
The Australian No.3 has been going through a difficult period with the bat and has not scored a Test century since the 2023 Ashes. Despite that prolonged lean patch, selectors have decided to keep faith with the 32-year-old for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa.
The decision comes shortly after Labuschagne was left out of Australia’s ODI squad for the South African leg of the team’s limited-overs campaign. His Test selection, therefore, gives him another opportunity to revive his red-ball career.
Australia’s Test tour will begin in Durban on October 9, followed by matches in Gqeberha and Cape Town.
Marnus Labuschagne survives another selection test
If there was one name Australia fans expected to see debated heavily before the squad announcement, it was Labuschagne.
The right-hander has struggled to produce the consistency that once made him one of Australia’s most dependable Test batters. His most recent Test century came in Manchester against England in July 2023, when he scored 111. Since then, the runs have become increasingly difficult to find.
According to Cricket Australia, Labuschagne has averaged just 24.69 across 43 Test innings since that century. His recent series against Bangladesh did little to silence his critics, with scores of 1, 31 and 4.
Yet the selectors have opted against dropping him.
Australia chief selector George Bailey has backed Labuschagne to make a positive contribution, although his selection in the squad does not automatically guarantee a place in the playing XI. With several batting options available, the competition for the top order could become one of the most interesting storylines of the series.
In simple terms, Labuschagne has received another ticket. Now he has to make sure he uses it.
Why is Australia still backing Labuschagne?
The decision may look surprising on paper, but Australia clearly still see value in having an experienced No.3 batter in the squad.
Labuschagne has been a major part of Australia’s Test setup since breaking into the side during the 2019 Ashes. He established himself at No.3 and became one of the team’s most productive batters during Australia’s successful Test cycle.
There is also the South Africa factor.
Labuschagne was born in South Africa and spent the first decade of his life there, although he has never played a Test match in the country. Interestingly, his two ODI centuries have both come in South Africa, which means the upcoming tour could offer him a familiar environment in which to rediscover his best form.
However, the competition for places means there are no guarantees.
Young all-rounder Cooper Connolly has been included, while Josh Inglis also provides another option in the batting group. That gives Australia additional flexibility if the selectors decide to change the top order.
Cooper Connolly gets another opportunity
One of the most interesting inclusions in Australia’s squad is Cooper Connolly.
The 23-year-old all-rounder has been identified as part of Australia’s future plans and returns to the Test squad after making his debut in Sri Lanka in early 2025. His recent batting performances have helped strengthen his case for another opportunity at international level.
Connolly’s bowling workload has been affected by a back complaint, but selectors believe he can gradually reintegrate his bowling.
His inclusion could also provide Australia with an intriguing selection option in the middle order.
If Labuschagne fails to convince the selectors during the tour, Connolly could find himself in the conversation for a place in the XI.
Australia pick five fast bowlers
Australia have gone heavy on pace for the South Africa assignment.
Captain Pat Cummins will be joined by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland and Michael Neser.
That is a formidable collection of fast-bowling experience, and conditions in South Africa could make Australia’s pace attack particularly important.
Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood remain the headline names, while Boland offers another highly reliable option. Neser has also earned his place after returning from a calf injury and adds further depth to Australia’s bowling resources.
With three Tests packed into a relatively short period, Australia could potentially rotate their fast bowlers depending on conditions, workload and fitness.
Nathan Lyon gets spin support
Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon remains Australia’s first-choice spin option, but he will have support from left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann.
Kuhnemann’s selection is significant because it gives Australia a different type of spin option alongside Lyon.
The conditions could also influence Australia’s combination. While South Africa is traditionally associated with fast bowling, certain pitches can offer assistance to spinners as matches progress. Cricket Australia has specifically highlighted the possibility of Kuhnemann partnering Lyon during the series.

Australia return to South Africa for Tests after 2018
The Test series carries additional significance because it will be Australia’s first Test tour of South Africa since the infamous 2018 ball-tampering saga.
Only a handful of players from that period remain involved with the current Australian side, including Cummins, Hazlewood, Smith and Starc.
The two teams also have unfinished business from the 2025 World Test Championship Final, when South Africa defeated Australia at Lord’s to claim the title. The upcoming series will therefore have plenty of sporting spice even before the first ball is bowled.
Can Labuschagne save his Test career?
That may ultimately become the biggest question of the tour.
Australia have shown that they are not ready to give up on Labuschagne yet. But selection is one thing and playing well is another.
With Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Matthew Renshaw, Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly all in the squad, Australia have several possibilities if they decide to change the batting order.
Labuschagne therefore arrives in South Africa with both an opportunity and a considerable amount of pressure.
Three years without a Test century is a long wait for a batter who was once among the world’s best. If he can rediscover his touch in Durban, the entire conversation could change very quickly.
If he cannot, however, Australia may finally be forced to ask the question that has been hanging over their No.3 position for some time: how long can reputation keep a place safe when the runs have stopped coming?
For Labuschagne, South Africa is not just another Test tour. It could be his biggest audition yet.
