New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon enjoyed a different kind of role during the fourth T20I between New Zealand and India, as he stepped into the commentary box at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, October 30. The New Zealand leader shared glimpses of his cricket commentary experience on social media and used the opportunity to praise Glenn Phillips for his explosive century against India.
The match turned into a memorable occasion for the home crowd, with Phillips producing a remarkable batting display to help New Zealand register their highest-ever T20I total. His innings, combined with Michael Bracewell’s blistering half-century, powered the Blackcaps to an imposing 259/7 in 20 overs.
Luxon was clearly impressed by what he witnessed from the commentary box. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the New Zealand Prime Minister shared his experience and highlighted Phillips’ outstanding contribution.
“In the commentary box at Eden Park tonight for the @BLACKCAPS v India. Unreal innings from Glenn Phillips and a huge effort with the bat from the Blackcaps,” Luxon wrote.
His appearance added an interesting political touch to an already entertaining cricket evening. While the Indian team had entered the contest with an unassailable series lead, the New Zealand players ensured that their home supporters had plenty to celebrate.
Glenn Phillips smashes third T20I century against India
The biggest talking point of the evening was undoubtedly Glenn Phillips’ extraordinary batting performance. The right-handed batter scored 107 runs from just 49 deliveries, recording his third century in T20I cricket.
Phillips struck six fours and 10 sixes during his innings, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 218.37. He looked comfortable against both pace and spin, regularly finding the boundary and putting the Indian bowling attack under enormous pressure.
His innings was particularly important because New Zealand had lost Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell during the powerplay. Rather than allowing the early setbacks to affect the scoring rate, Phillips took responsibility and continued attacking the Indian bowlers.
Finn Allen also contributed 31 runs from 17 balls, helping the hosts maintain an aggressive approach during the opening overs.
Phillips eventually departed in the 20th over after attempting a lofted drive against Nitish Kumar Reddy. The batter failed to get the required connection, allowing Abhishek Sharma to complete the catch at deep extra cover.
However, by that point, Phillips had already done considerable damage.
Michael Bracewell joins the party with explosive 65
Phillips was not the only New Zealand batter who made life difficult for India’s bowlers. Michael Bracewell delivered another spectacular performance, scoring 65 runs from just 25 deliveries.
Bracewell’s innings included four boundaries and six maximums, as he took advantage of the momentum created by Phillips.
The pair stitched together a crucial 115-run partnership from just 41 deliveries, completely changing the complexion of the innings.
Bracewell reached his half-century in only 19 balls, showcasing the kind of aggressive batting that has become increasingly important in modern T20 cricket.
India struggled to contain the New Zealand batters, with Nitish Kumar Reddy conceding 64 runs in his four overs. Mayank Yadav was India’s most successful bowler, picking up three wickets, although he also conceded 48 runs.
New Zealand eventually finished at 259/7, surpassing their previous highest T20I total of 254/5 against Scotland in 2022.
The 259-run total also became the highest score by any team against India in men’s T20I cricket, going past England’s previous record of 257/3 in Southampton earlier in 2026.
India suffer an 87-run defeat despite leading the series
Although India had already secured the five-match T20I series by winning the opening three matches, the fourth encounter proved to be a reality check for Shreyas Iyer’s side.
Chasing 260 for victory, India suffered an early collapse as Jacob Duffy struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan.
The early wickets put India under immediate pressure, and the visitors struggled to recover from the difficult start.
Abhishek Sharma scored 27 runs, while Naman Dhir contributed 28. Tilak Varma also offered some resistance with 35 runs, but the required scoring rate continued to climb.
India eventually finished at 172/9 in their allotted 20 overs, handing New Zealand an impressive 87-run victory.
Glenn Phillips was named Player of the Match for his match-winning century.
Despite the defeat, India maintained a 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The result also ended India’s impressive unbeaten T20I run against New Zealand on New Zealand soil, which had lasted since 2019.
India will look to finish the series on a winning note
India had dominated the opening three matches of the series, with their third T20I victory being particularly memorable.
Abhishek Sharma smashed a sensational 113, while young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed 45 runs. The Indian opening pair added 118 runs during the powerplay, creating a remarkable platform for the chase.
India eventually chased down New Zealand’s target of 199 in just 13.2 overs, underlining their batting firepower.
However, the fourth T20I demonstrated that New Zealand still have the ability to produce an extraordinary performance when their batting unit clicks together.
For Phillips, the century was another statement of his growing importance in the Blackcaps’ batting lineup. His consistent contributions throughout the series have made him one of the standout performers of the contest.
Luxon’s appearance in the commentary box and his public appreciation of Phillips added another memorable moment to the evening at Eden Park.
With one match remaining, India will now look to finish the series strongly, while New Zealand will aim to carry the confidence from their convincing victory into the final encounter.
