Football round-up: Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1 as Brighton score halfway-line stunner
Real Madrid returned to winning ways with a convincing 4-1 victory over Sevilla, while Brighton produced one of the weekend’s most spectacular moments with a remarkable 50-meter goal against Crystal Palace. Arsenal also secured a narrow Premier League victory, Bayer Leverkusen handed Freiburg its first Bundesliga defeat of the season, and Monaco suffered a damaging loss in France.
It was a weekend packed with goals, dramatic finishes and important developments across Europe’s leading football leagues. Kylian Mbappe continued to make headlines for Real Madrid, Diego Gomez delivered a long-range masterpiece for Brighton, and several title contenders strengthened their positions in their respective competitions.
From the Spanish La Liga to the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1, the latest football results provided plenty of talking points for supporters.
Real Madrid defeat Sevilla as Mbappe shines again
Real Madrid secured an impressive 4-1 win over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a stunning goal and converting a second-half penalty to help his team collect three important points.
Madrid entered the contest without Vinicius Junior, who began serving a four-match suspension following an incident involving an opponent and the referee. Despite missing the Brazilian forward, the Spanish giants found enough attacking quality to overcome Sevilla.
Arda Guler opened the scoring in the 30th minute with an excellent finish into the top corner. His goal came shortly after a video assistant referee review involving Sevilla’s Peque, following an apparent elbowing incident with the Madrid midfielder. The review did not result in a red card.
Mbappe doubled Madrid’s advantage in the 37th minute with a brilliant individual effort. The France international controlled the ball while turning, used a quick touch to escape his marker and rounded Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos before finishing.
The forward then converted a penalty in the 63rd minute to strengthen Madrid’s grip on the match. Sevilla’s Manu Bueno managed to pull one goal back, but Yan Diomande scored in the 82nd minute to complete the 4-1 victory.
The result kept Real Madrid firmly involved in the La Liga title race. Madrid moved to third place, one point behind Atletico Madrid and six points behind leaders Barcelona, who had beaten Real Betis 5-2 on Saturday.
Mbappe’s performance once again highlighted his importance to Madrid’s attacking plans. With Vinicius unavailable, the French forward took responsibility and helped his side secure a comfortable result.
Brighton’s Diego Gomez scores a stunning 50-meter goal
Brighton delivered one of the weekend’s most memorable moments in English football, defeating Crystal Palace 5-0 in a dominant performance highlighted by Diego Gomez’s extraordinary long-range strike.
The Paraguay international scored in the seventh minute after collecting the ball near the halfway line. He carried it just inside Palace’s half before launching a remarkable shot from approximately 50 meters.
Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez had advanced from his line, leaving the goal exposed. Gomez spotted the opportunity and sent the ball over the stranded goalkeeper, producing a spectacular finish that immediately became one of the standout moments of the weekend.
Brighton’s emphatic victory demonstrated their attacking threat and punished Palace for an early defensive mistake. Gomez’s goal was particularly significant because of the distance and awareness required to recognise the goalkeeper’s position.
The result also provided Brighton supporters with a memorable afternoon, as their team combined attacking efficiency with a clean sheet.
Arsenal edge Nottingham Forest as Manchester United draw
Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, with substitute Noni Madueke scoring the decisive goal late in the match.
The Gunners had to remain patient against a Forest side that made life difficult for the hosts. With the contest still goalless, Madueke’s late contribution proved decisive and allowed Arsenal to claim all three points.
For a team competing at the top end of the Premier League, these closely contested matches can be just as important as convincing wins. Arsenal’s ability to find a breakthrough late in the game offered another example of the value of squad depth.
Manchester United, meanwhile, finished a challenging week with a 1-1 draw against fierce rivals Leeds United. The result prevented United from securing a much-needed victory, leaving the club with further questions to address as the season progresses.
AC Milan win thriller as Lazio defeat Juventus
AC Milan earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Atalanta, recording their second win in three matches across all competitions and moving into fourth place in Serie A.
Milan established a three-goal lead by the 57th minute but were forced to defend their advantage after Atalanta scored twice. The late pressure made the closing stages tense, although Milan ultimately held on.
The victory kept Milan four points behind league leaders Inter Milan, who had beaten Bologna 3-1 on Saturday.
Lazio produced another major result by defeating Juventus 3-0 away from home. Juventus were without coach Luciano Spalletti on the touchline because he was serving a one-match suspension following an altercation with Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane.
The defeat left Juventus in eighth place, while Lazio climbed to second in the standings.
Elsewhere, Como strengthened their position with a 3-1 win over second-to-last Fiorentina. Lecce also collected three valuable points, beating Udinese 3-0 in an important result for the lower half of the table.
Monaco lose unbeaten record as Lyon move top
Monaco missed an opportunity to strengthen their position at the top of Ligue 1 after suffering a 1-0 defeat away to Lorient.
The match was decided in the 61st minute when Noah Cadiou converted a penalty. Monaco had entered the contest with the chance to retain first place with a victory, but Lorient’s disciplined performance denied them that opportunity.
The defeat also ended Monaco’s status as the only unbeaten team in the French league.
Lyon subsequently defeated Nice 2-1 to move to the top of Ligue 1. Monaco dropped to fifth place and remained level on 14 points with several other teams in a tightly contested standings.
Paris Saint-Germain also secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Rennes, with a penalty deep into stoppage time deciding the match. Rennes forward Esteban Lepaul scored a hat trick consisting entirely of penalties, including one in the 88th minute.
Marseille also enjoyed a much-needed result, coming from behind to beat Angers 5-2. The victory offered encouragement after a difficult start to the campaign.
Bayer Leverkusen hand Freiburg first Bundesliga defeat
Freiburg suffered their first defeat of the Bundesliga season after losing 2-1 away to Bayer Leverkusen.
Derry Scherhant gave Freiburg the lead in the 14th minute, raising hopes of another positive result. However, Leverkusen responded quickly, with Ibrahim Maza equalising five minutes later.
The decisive moment arrived in the 76th minute when Patrik Schick found the net to complete the comeback.
Schick also achieved an important personal milestone, becoming Leverkusen’s first player to score in each of the opening six Bundesliga matches of a season.
The result ended Freiburg’s impressive unbeaten league run and prevented them from moving back into first place. Freiburg remained on 13 points, one behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Leverkusen’s performance provided further evidence of their strong start under coach Carles Martinez. The team has recorded six victories in seven matches across all competitions since beginning his tenure with a surprise defeat to Elversberg.
Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Hoffenheim, leaving the struggling club at the bottom of the standings.
Barcelona women suffer rare defeat, Celtic strengthen lead
Barcelona’s women’s team experienced a significant setback after losing 2-1 away to Real Sociedad. The defeat ended their unbeaten start to the season and marked their first loss in almost a year.
Barcelona, the reigning Women’s Champions League winners, had last lost to Sociedad in the Spanish league in November. Despite the setback, they remained top of the domestic standings, two points ahead of Real Madrid.
In Scotland, Celtic delivered an emphatic statement by beating Hearts 7-1 at home in the Scottish Premiership.
Benjamin Nygren and Callum Osmand both scored twice as Celtic increased their advantage over Rangers to four points. Rangers had drawn 2-2 against Dundee on Saturday, while third-place Hearts fell four points behind Rangers after nine rounds.
The result strengthened Celtic’s position in the title race and underlined their attacking strength.
