Chad Laycock takes 5 wickets in one over to create T20 history
South African fast bowler Chad Laycock produced one of the most remarkable bowling performances in domestic T20 cricket, taking five wickets in a single over during the CSA Pro20 Cup 2026 clash between KwaZulu-Natal Inland and the Titans. Despite his incredible spell, Laycock’s team suffered a 21-run defeat in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, October 13.
The right-arm pacer finished with career-best figures of 6 wickets for 26 runs in four overs, becoming the first South African bowler to take five wickets in one over in men’s T20 cricket. His extraordinary performance also established a new bowling record in the competition, underlining why the 2026 Pro20 Cup has become a talking point among cricket fans. Wisden and Cricket South Africa reported on the historic feat.
Chad Laycock’s incredible five-wicket over
The defining moment arrived in the 19th over of the Titans’ innings. With the opposition looking comfortable at 193 for four after 18 overs, Laycock returned to the attack and completely changed the course of the innings.
He began by bowling Leus du Plooy for two runs. Dayyaan Galiem then managed two runs from the next delivery, but the situation quickly turned into a nightmare for the Titans.
Laycock dismissed Galiem on the third ball, with Malcolm Nofal completing the catch. He followed that breakthrough by bowling Aphiwe Mnyanda, Janco Smit and Esosa Aihevba off the next three deliveries.
The sequence gave Laycock four wickets in four consecutive balls, following Du Plooy’s dismissal earlier in the same over. In total, he claimed five wickets in the over, an achievement rarely seen in the shortest format.
The Titans collapsed from 193 for four to 204 all out in 19.5 overs. Four of Laycock’s five wickets in the over came through bowled dismissals, demonstrating how effectively he attacked the stumps under pressure.
It was not simply a late burst of wickets. It was a spell that transformed a potentially enormous Titans total into a score that their opponents could realistically chase.
Titans recover from the collapse to win by 21 runs
Despite Laycock’s outstanding bowling, the Titans had already done enough with the bat to put themselves in a strong position.
Opening batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius led the charge with a blistering 81 off just 36 deliveries, striking 11 fours and four sixes. He and Sinethemba Qeshile built a commanding 112-run opening partnership that put the Titans on course for a huge total.
Qeshile contributed 46 off 29 balls, while young power-hitter Dewald Brevis added 33 from 24 deliveries. Their contributions helped the Titans dominate the early and middle stages of the innings before Laycock’s remarkable intervention.
Laycock had actually provided his team with an earlier breakthrough, dismissing Pretorius in the ninth over. The wicket was particularly important because the opener was scoring at a rapid pace and threatening to take the match away from KwaZulu-Natal Inland.
However, the damage had already been done by the Titans’ top order, and the late collapse did not prevent them from posting 204.
Chasing 205 for victory, KwaZulu-Natal Inland finished on 183 for six in their allotted 20 overs, losing by 21 runs.
Michael Erlank kept the chase alive with an impressive 56 off 33 balls, while Laycock contributed an unbeaten 31 from 25 deliveries. His all-round effort was remarkable, but the target proved just beyond his team’s reach.
The result extended the Titans’ winning run to six matches, strengthening their position in the competition. For KwaZulu-Natal Inland, the defeat was a disappointing outcome after such a historic individual performance.
Who is Chad Laycock?
Chad Laycock is a South African all-rounder who represents KwaZulu-Natal Inland, also known as the Tuskers. Before this match, he had been building his career across South Africa’s domestic cricket formats.
According to published career statistics, Laycock had played eight first-class matches, seven List A games and 16 T20 matches. He had scored runs across all three formats while developing his bowling credentials.
His performance against the Titans represents a significant milestone in that journey. Taking six wickets in a T20 match is already an exceptional achievement, but claiming five of them in one over places him in a much smaller group of players.
The match also highlighted his value as an all-rounder. His unbeaten 31 gave KwaZulu-Natal Inland some hope during the chase, even after his outstanding bowling display had failed to secure a victory.
For a player still developing his senior career, such a performance could prove an important moment in attracting greater attention from domestic selectors and cricket followers. Future opportunities, however, will depend on his performances over a longer period rather than one memorable match.
Chad Laycock sets a new South African T20 bowling benchmark
Laycock’s figures of 6/26 surpassed the previous best bowling figures in the CSA Pro20 Cup, which were recorded by Beuran Hendricks in 2014.
More importantly, he became the first South African to take five wickets in a single over in men’s T20 cricket. The achievement also made him the fourth player overall to record five wickets in an over in men’s T20 matches, according to contemporary reports.
The previous players to achieve the feat were Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain in 2013, India’s Abhimanyu Mithun in 2019 and Indonesia’s Gede Priandana in 2025.
Priandana achieved his five-wicket over against Cambodia in a T20 international, while Mithun produced his performance for Karnataka against Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Al-Amin’s feat came while representing UCB-BCB XI against Abahani Limited.
Laycock’s performance is particularly notable because he combined five wickets in one over with another earlier dismissal to finish with six wickets overall. He also became the first bowler reported to have taken four wickets in four consecutive deliveries in South African T20 cricket.
Such records are difficult to achieve because T20 cricket generally favours batters, especially during the closing overs when teams attempt to maximise their scoring. A bowler must combine accuracy, variations, composure and the ability to exploit a batter’s mistakes.
Laycock managed to do exactly that when the Titans were preparing to accelerate towards the end of their innings.
Can Laycock build on this historic performance?
The biggest question now is whether Laycock can turn this record-breaking display into sustained success. One extraordinary spell can bring a player into the spotlight, but consistency across an entire season is what helps establish a reputation.
His ability to take wickets at the death will be particularly interesting to watch. Teams increasingly rely on aggressive finishing batters, and bowlers who can disrupt that momentum become valuable assets in T20 cricket.
At the same time, his contribution with the bat offers KwaZulu-Natal Inland another option in the middle and lower order. If he continues to deliver useful runs alongside his bowling, his all-round skills could become even more important for the Tuskers.
For now, the record books will remember October 13, 2026, as the day Chad Laycock produced five wickets in one over against the Titans. Although his team could not complete the victory, his individual performance ensured that the match would be remembered far beyond the final score.
